Full of excellent period detail. It zips along with lots of incident.A" NIGEL RANDELL, Emmy Award winner and Author

Product Description

This is a brand new historical thriller from Peter Mottley based on William Hogarth's celebrated 1733 etchings, "A Harlot's Progress". The first in a trilogy, "Yorkshire Molly" is a compelling story of one woman's misadventures in 18th century London and the first novel to bring these fascinating historical prints to life. Heroine Molly Huckerby arrives in London from Yorkshire into the exciting, vibrant and forbidding streets of the capital. She is soon approached by the notorious bawd Mother Wickham who cunningly seduces the heroine into a life of prostitution in a Cheapside brothel. The first in a trilogy, the story has elements of both bawdy romp and the serious struggles of a young woman against overwhelming misfortune. As well as comedy moments there is a breathtaking twist in the tale that keeps the reader gripped with a rewarding and not unhappy ending. Mottley (1935-2006) paints London with a colourful stroke, rich with historical accuracy that is the result of years of meticulous research. Following his death, his daughter found hundreds of well referenced books about 18th century London among his belongings. 'Full of excellent period detail. It zips along with lots of incident' - Nigel Randell, Emmy Award winner and Author. The book trailer is available to view online.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brutal, 27 Mar 2011
This review is from: The Harlot's Progress: Pt. 1: Yorkshire Molly (Paperback)
The book is brutal, and its about sex. Until I got drawn into the story (and simultaneously, into Hogarth's etchings) I was taken aback by how the multiple rapes and enslavement appeared to be presented as titillation... but once I made the transition from my cozy futuristic existence, completely into the desperate entrapment of the setting, it all gelled and I was able to simply accept the harlot's fate and follow her on her adventure of a life. Sounds pretty perverse? Well, it was. This was a great book and I'll look forward to the sequel...?

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Molly gets Top Marks, 3 Jan 2010

Firstly I feel I must confess that I am a friend of the late author's daughter and I bought this book out of duty to support the launch. To be truthful I had no expectations of the book and did not expect to get past the first few pages.

However it was clear in the first few pages that this was written be an accomplished author and the period detail really impresses. I kept reading and found the book compelling and soon I could not wait to immerse myslef into Molly's world. The dialogue, character development and story are all excellent and you can play it out so realistically in your mind that surely ITV for the sex or BBC for the quality of the period scenes will make a production of this.

If you are looking for an involving intelligent and compelling read you have found it!
