5.0 out of 5 stars Hark At Barker at last! 6 July 2009
By cyman
I have been searching for this collection for decades, and couldn't believe my eyes when at last it appeared on Amazon.com.

If you are a fan of Ronnie Barker and you have NOT seen this series then all I can say is you have not seen him at his best. He plays the eccentric Lord Rustless of Chrome Hall and spends his time teaching the cast (and us) about various aspects of life ... both at the upper crust, and a little further down into the "bread of life" (my quote as far as I know). A MUST have!

I enjoyed this dvd for nostalgic reasons, not as good as Ronnie Barkers other comedies.

A strange beast this... comedy from London Weekend TV that actually makes you laugh...
Two DVDs, one in B/W from '69 and the other, as Lord Rustless has it in the first show on DVD #2 in COLOUR from '70... when the two old channels BBC1 & ITV went to colour transmissions like BBC2 had been... of course the second show on disc 2 is in B/W which highlights how lucky we are that something as ephemeral as this has survived at all.
This is gentle stuff... Ronnie Barker as Lord Rustless and the lovely Josephine Tewson as "Bates" his faded amenuensis in '20s clothing and "earphone" hairstyle later copied by Carrie Fisher... I adored the show back then and I love it now. The rambling Rustless links short pithy sketches rather like some of those aired later in the Two Ronnies show ... not surprising when Ronnie Barker is one of the authors (as Gerald Wiley). These shows bear watching even 40 years later although the sexist (sorry but it IS) interplay between Rustless and the maid Effie certainly shows the age of the material.
Buy them. Network deserve the business for giving us these gems of a bygone age and we will not see stuff like this again. These discs are going to appreciate in value, mark my words!

Oh, and check out "Futtocks End", you liked that, you'll like this and vice versa...
