Product Description

Product Description

HAREM GIRL is, at its heart, an engaging and erotic love story.

Sapphira, beautiful and assured, tells in unblushing and sensuous detail of her journey through life, briefly as an innocent young girl in Tunisia, then as one of eleven slave girls in an Arabian sheikh's harem, where her life changes utterly. Shamelessly, she reveals the sheikh's secrets of exotic lovemaking, and writes down all in her journal, her every thought, fear, and pleasure, with pressing frankness.

There is much to learn before she is "called" to her Master. Eunuchs train and instruct her in every facet of the art of pleasing a man.

..."on one hand, I looked forward to knowing these things, yet on the other, I was aghast at the way I had to show myself and the distasteful things I might have to do. It thoroughly unnerved me to realize that I must know a man in these ways--a man I scarcely knew"...

Her description of life in the harem is compelling and moving, recalling a level of lustful debauchery, submission, and decadence unimaginable today, but completely believable in the era in which it is set...and we are like the "fly on the wall" to watch intriguing, romantic, and sometimes wretched events unfold.

About the Author

A metallurgist by training, a writer by inclination and default. Born in England, Mariyah Saalih travelled extensively in Europe and the Middle East before settling down in North America. A tour of the grand harem in the Alhambra Palace in Grenada inspired the writing of this first full length novel.

Harem Girl 18 July 2004
By David B
Format:Paperback
HAREM GIRL is, at its heart, an engaging and erotic love story. Yet it is also much more than that. It takes us on a tumultuous adventure as we follow the main character, Mariyah, from her girlhood in Tunisia to early middle age in Arabia during the opening years of the last century. We experience with her the joys and sorrows of an eventful life. We follow in her footsteps as she marries young, is sold into slavery as one of the harem of an Arabian sheikh, eventually marries him and is ultimately brought face-to-face with the troubled past that she can neither escape nor hide from.

She recalls in lucid, unashamed and unblushing detail her tortuous life as "Sapphira", one of eleven slave girls in the sheikh's service. She guides us, much as we might imagine the sheikh's eunuchs to have guided and instructed her, through an intimate experience both heartwarming and harrowing. HAREM GIRL's depictions of lustful debauchery, decadence and total female submission to the will of a man are hard for us to comprehend in today's world, yet they are entirely believable for the bygone age in which the novel is set.

Sapphira, even after her life-changing immersion in the harem and extensive instruction in the 'art' of pleasing a man, remains "aghast at the way I had to show myself" and appalled by "the distasteful things I might have to do". Nonetheless, she describes for us the secrets of the sheikh's sexy lovemaking and gradually opens up chinks in his cold and indifferent armour. Even the strongest hearts - and perhaps this is one of the novel's most profound messages - are not made of stone and, in time, a man and a woman fall in love and Sapphira crosses the forbidden boundary that she could scarcely have imagined doing at the start of her journey.

At length, years later, her unlawful deceit returns to haunt her and her now-calm life as the sheikh's wife collapses as she is faced by swift and cruel retribution. Like a spider web of innumerable strands, her lifetime is filled with enough highs and lows to fill ten lifetimes, yet HAREM GIRL is still a believable tale, written both skillfully and sensitively.

I bought this book for myself, thoroughly enjoyed it, and then gave it to my lover. It was well received-as were the thanks the book inspired!

If you enjoy sheik/harem girl stories, you will not be disappointed! However, note the sensible warning on the back cover:-"A book recommended for the mature and broad minded-not for teenage daughters." It is quite erotically explicit in parts, but tastefully written, not pornographic.

A harem story delightfully full of atmosphere, intrigue and devious romance.

I was at first a little concerned about the subject matter and whether the author had fallen into that, oh so common, trap of writing pornography as pretence for eroticism. But not in this novel. Saalih has done a masterful job of writing tastefully and titillating about what inevitably has very sexy content and context - life in an Arabian harem - and I have no compunction whatsoever in wholeheartedly recommending this book to mature and sexually experienced readers (and those wanting to become experienced)- but not teenage daughters!

Read it with someone you want to undress!

This book gives a good account of the life enjoyed/suffered by women who were kidnapped or captured and then sold into slavery, often into a Harem. I don't think that someone looking for a story full of 'hot sex' would be interested in reading this book. It is more of an historical account.
