Book Description

A timeless fable made immediate and fresh for the youngest readers

Product Description

'I am sure to win, but we will race if you like.' So laughs the hare when a slow tortoise challenges him to run all the way to the old cart. His speed is never in doubt but perhaps it is the hare's boastfulness that should make us question the likely outcome of the race? The simple message of this La Fontaine fable - that modesty and perseverance will always be rewarded - is gloriously told in this lovely picture book from Brian Wildsmith, an internationally acclaimed writer and artist for children. His simple words and sumptuous illustrations bring a freshness to this timeless fable and the stunning new cover design and imaginative interior typography will delight a whole new generation of young Wildsmith fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic version of the classic tale. And like the constant tortoise, definitely the winner., 9 Nov 2007

I bought this book back in 2000 pregnant with my first child because I thought the illustrations were glorious, retro with strong colours and a rather different feel to many of the books coming out these days. It was an inspired choice because it has become a staple of our bookshelf: all three of my children have absolutely loved it. It's a well-known story, Aesop's absolute classic, with its timeless message of more haste, less speed.
The images make this book special - they are very striking, in Wildsmith's particular style, and caught the children's attention from a young age (around 18 months). There is a strong picture of the hare and the tortoise on the first page and then there are lots of illustrations crammed with a great variety of animals they loved to spot and point out. The actual text is fairly minimal, just two or three sentences per double page which means for the younger listener just beginning to look at proper stories you can fly through the pages at a hare's speed, befitting their quick-moving attention span. However, a child in the first year or two of school would be able to have a good stab at reading it alone. Like the tale itself, this beautiful book also stands the test of time.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very poor pictures, 13 Nov 2009
By S. Dales (S.Yorkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Im very disappointed with this book due to the strange style of pictures.

My 3yr old son loves his bedtime stories, and likes to look at the pictures as I read to him. I think pictures help him to understand the story as I read the book to him.

But the pictures in this book are simply awful. They are drawn in an abstract way and its difficult even for me to interpret them. They do nothing to entertain or explain the story. I have to try hard to convince my son that the picture of the hare, is actually a hare! The picture on the front cover is perhaps the clearest and most understandable picture in the entire book, the rest just look like splodges on the pages.

Perhaps for an older child the pictures might be more suitable, but for a young toddler they are very confusing. So much so, that I am planning on selling this book.

Such a shame as the story is such a classic. I will search for another book.
