5.0 out of 5 stars One of the books that defines cyberpunk 8 Mar 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
William Gibson might have invented all the rules of cyberpunk but Hardwired was the book that took those rules and had the most fun with them. First published in 1986, two years after Neuromancer, Hardwired takes all the cyberpunk architypes, the lawless hacker, the fusion of metal and flesh, the faceless corporations, the electronic frontier of the net, and throws them into a story that spans a fractured, balkanised United States and demonstrates serious action chops. The sequence where Cowboy takes his ground-effect tank on a midnight blockade-running trip across the central states is one amazing sequence in many.

I loved the book back then, I mourned the day I lost my only paperback copy and it's with great joy that I discovered it finally available on Kindle. I like my sci-fi to be about man and his creations, not about space opera or aliens or time travel. If you do too, if you like dark, dystopian visions of a place that sounds like a credible vision of the future, then you've GOT to read this. With trepidation, I'm off to read the long-awaited sequel. It's got a lot to live up to...

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good once you get past the characters name 9 April 2010
By Haydies
Format:Paperback
I read this quite a few years ago, but it was good. Ok, I admit that when the main character is called 'cowboy' I was a little bit dubious, but it is explained as to why. Ok, it's still a little bit sad but after a few pages when the action starts you really don't care to much about it any more.

Over all its a good fun book, I did like it and seeing it here and writing this has reminded me so I think I might even read it again now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure, brutal, imaginative and realistic 19 Dec 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This is cyberpunk of a quality I've rarely read. Tightly scriped, coherent story. Characters I believed in. Strugle, honour amongst the ruins of civilisation, love. And damn good fights, weapons and tech.

3.0 out of 5 stars It is Cyberpunk, but not of a level of Gibson 7 July 2014
By Halo572
Format:Kindle Edition
and I found it on my occasional trawls to see if I have missed any of what is a very small area of Cyberpunk literature.

It does have human augmentation, advanced technologies, shadowy near orbit based corporations, mentions of the Net and private mercenary security outfits but for me it was too far removed from near future to compete with Gibson.

Rock wars in the form of asteroids flung at Earth by the orbit based corporations to subjugate Earth, America annexed and normal and black markets controlled by the corporations for their own ends.

Panzerboys making East to West coast runs in vehicles straight out of Car Wars to transport contraband for the Thirdmen, with The Laws trying to stop them anyway they can.

The ex-pilot Cowboy now a panzerboy dreaming of taking his Delta back into the no fly zone sky and taking down the unprincipled Corporations.

Gibson excelled in this area because it was based on a failed future based on our current reality that was completely believable, with Williams he adds in too much sci fi for my taste.

Try it, you may find it is more to your taste than Gibson but for me it is a branch of Cyberpunk with flashes of Gibson but not ultimately on the same level.

And if you think Damnation Alley influence you won't go too far wrong.
