L. Pedley says:
I just want to say how great it is to read a new novel whose author does not feel the need to use the 'F' word on almost every page. I read a book recently and it featured 6 times on one page. Why?? it adds nothing to the story. I feel that we have a language rich enough to express ourselves without the use of four letter words.

Yes, but dialogue has to be the exception, surely? Some characters do use expletives in speech, and you lose something if you bowdlerize it. In one of my favourite novels, The Charioteer, Mary Renault uses the substitute 'mucking' to convey the habitual swearing of a private in the army. It does look a bit odd...

N. Turner says:
Don't read Nesbo's latest, The Phantom, then. Full of expletives because of the criminal characters he writes about in this novel. A pretty grim read actually.
