Product Description

Gene Autry was known as a true American hero throughout the Thirties and Forties. The Texan was an all-singing, all-acting cowboy loved by the nation. On screen, he typified America's personification of the Wild West, while on the radio he was known as a pioneer of country music. One thing he isn't perhaps as well-known for is being the co-founder of Challenge Records. Discover the label's formative years, which made sure it etched its name into the US music scene, with 50 of the label's finest tracks here to enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars ONE DAY 19 April 2013

One Day Music seem to have taken the market by surprise with their re-issue sets. These cd`s may have no booklets alongs side them but the music speaks for itself. First rate everytime. How many times as a music collector have you thought about issuing your perfect cd, well this company go pretty close to my expectations. There may be a track or two you already own but believe me there are many more your just so glad to get your hands on. L.P. tracks galore and B sides you missed along the way are all here on one package ao another. At the asking price you just can not go wrong, try them then like me become hooked on One Day Music

5.0 out of 5 stars The early years 10 Aug 2013
By Richard
The Challenge label ran to the end of the 60s when it more or less morphed into another Gene Autrey label which was the reactivated Republic.
These recordings represent selections from the first 5 years.
Little from this label was issued in the U K where only the Champs scored regularly. Not even Jan and Dean had much of a profile here with just 2 singles at the lower end of the Top 30
Note Marty Balin the future Jefferson Airplane

4.0 out of 5 stars Rising to the Challenge 4 Feb 2013
By Amazon Customer TOP 500 REVIEWER

A very good compilation of late 50's early 60's tracks from `Challenge' records, founded in Hollywood in 1957 by the Country music legend Gene Autry. The sound quality is very good overall, a couple of tracks suffer with a little distortion but nothing to major. Roughly 2 hours of music across 50 tracks many of the best tracks written by Dave Burgess or by Jerry Fuller both great artist in their own write. Disc 1 - is a little disappointing though with only two or three great tracks - my favourite is `Desire' by the Trophies. However, disc 2 more than makes up for the first disc - there are so many great tracks here - like the fantastic `I laughed so hard I cried' by the Trophies, 'Little miss tease' by Jerry Wallace, of course your taste may differ from mine. As usual with these `One Day Music' compilations there's no booklet but there's a one sided introduction to the labels history. Overall, some good Doo Wop, Pop, Instrumentals and Rockin' sounds. Good stuff overall.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not A review - Jefferson Airplane. 23 Oct 2013
Whilst reading a history of Jefferson Airplane I noticed that a founder member of the group, Marty Balin, had released a few singles on the Challenge Label but under a different name.

So on a hunch I checked out the Challenge Story and there on both CDs tracks 15 are two Marty Balin singles
Nobody But You and
I specialize in Love.

This not so much a review so much as a little bit of information.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent price 4 Sep 2013

A varied mixture of the familiar and not so but for the price, there are complaints regarding track selection; packaging or quality.
I would thoroughly recommend this label and CD's to anyone with a love of Rock N Roll and wanting or needing to expand their collection.
