Spread over two CDs, Hard To Find is a brand new compilation series bringing together great and lost remixes from old 12" vinyl collections and CD singles (remember them?) gone by, that are...well...hard to find. If you consider yourself a trainspotter or a lover of quality music then this series is most definitely for you. DJ historian and journalist extraordinaire Bill Brewster writes the sleeve notes for the release and explains the concept behind the album:
"With Hard To Find, we've sent our vinyl archaeologists to sift through the wreckage of acid house, throwing aside the Alison Limerick double packs and long-forgotten Shamen promos to bring you the gold (the only fool's gold we'd permit would be by Stone Roses). But not only are these the very best of the remixes from the most creative period of house music, we like to think they define it, too. As if that weren't sufficient, many of them have never been made available on CD before."

So here is another cash-in compilation riding on the back of previous series such as "12"/80s" et al. This time, though, the concept is supposedly that these mixes are difficult to get one's hands on.
For a start, the compilers have leaned rather heavily on Cream's 2002 compilation "Cream Collect Balearic". From this they've taken the mixes by It's Immaterial and Saint Etienne (Weatherall's mix of "Only love can break your heart" should by now have an award for most-frequently-reissued mix). It seems no accident that "Cream Collect Balearic" also contained other mixes of the same tracks by William Orbit, Bassomatic and The Grid.
Chronology is not even thought about. The compilation darts about between early Balearic and commercial hip-hop circa 1990, dramatic pop circa 1981-82 and mid-'90s dance cheese, before ending with one of the most easy-to-find Frankie Goes To Hollywood remixes. Quite where Sheena Easton fits in is anyone's guess, but this mix of her late '80s single "101" was rereleased by Cherry Pop in 2006, on their remaster of her "The lover in me" album, and is still available. Likewise, the Leftfield remix was included on the Chemical Brothers remixes album in 2008.
Bluntly, then: with the exception of Arthur Baker's mix of "Buffalo stance", these mixes are neither obscure nor particularly desirable. Irrespective of the self-aggrandising statements by "DJ historian and journalist extraordinaire" Bill Brewster on his (ahem) selection process, this is a really, really weak effort.

Don't listen to DE01, this is actually a great compilation. Yes, some of the mixes are more established than others, but mostly, without numerous trips to eBay or Discogs, etc to get them individually, this is a great compendium of some great remixes from a time when that very word was an art form, not like now! Some great early stuff from Underworld, Norman Cook, the Chems, David Morales, Sub Sub....what's not to like?
