HARD TIMES - BBC REGION 2 DVD RICHARD E GRANT
The inhabitants of Coketown come to vivid life in this extraordinary BBC production of Dickens's dark treatise on capitalism without a conscience - a society in which everything is valued by price. Local MP and schoolmaster Thomas Gradgrind (Bob Peck) raises his children, Louisa and Tom, in the utilitarian fashion, stressing reason and fact and dismissing imagination and emotion. Under his influence, Louisa grows cold while Tom turns to a secret life of drinking and gambling. To be nearer her brother, Louisa accepts and offer of marriage from his boss, the self-made, self-important banker Josiah Bounderby (Alan Bates), though she does not love him. But soon she finds herself succumbing to the attentions of the lothario James Harthouse (Richard E. Grant). All the while, Mrs. Sparsit, a former aristocrat who now works for Bounderby, obsessively watches as the drama unfolds, longing for Louisa's downfall. As Louisa faces a life without love and Tom's fate begins to turn even darker, will Gradgrind begin to realize begin to realize the imperfections in his philosophy of rational self-interest?

I love this film version of an excellent Dickens novel. Richard E Grant is always a favourite and adds depth to his character. The bleakness is beautifully represented.

I bought this dvd through amazon for a very small price and althogh it is not a long running time it is excellent. I enjoyed it very much being a big Dickens fan I have been for about fifty years and the acting was superb. I will continue to buy through amazon as the companies they deal with are excellent

Dickensian Drama
As the title implies, it's about hard times in Dickin's days. Not one of the best, in my opinion.

schools tv at its best!
yes, this production was originally made for schools tv and shown in 30 minute episodes at lunchtime...
