Shelly takes an intricate yet pared down approach on her debut album, placing emphasis on live percussion and vocal experimentation. This is most evident on delicate ballads like "If You Will Be Pilot", where hand drums pick out the pace. While the fragile structure of "Don't Look That Way", is marked soley by Shelly's sweet voice.
The best songs here are more upbeat. Title track "Hard Time For The Dreamer" lays a gorgeous melody over a catchy guitar riff to brilliant effect, while the groovy Motown rhythm of "Lose Yourself" counters the deeply introspective ballads which crowd the album's second half.
The album closes with the haunting "Hope", the second of two duets with New Yorker Jack Savoretti.
An honest and well-crafted record that toys with elements of country rock, soul and blues. Well worth a listen. --Jack Smith

I was a huge fan of Alisha's Attic and jumped for joy when I read in Music Week of solo tracks by Shelly. Thankfully I didn't have to wait too long before I found tracks on iTunes. If you don't fall for album-taster track Totally Underwater -a dreamy, gently rhythmic extension of Attic material- then just wait until you hear the beautiful masterpiece of a lead single, Little Wonder. Other stand out tracks include the Jewel-like, heart-tugging Lost In You and the gentle, gorgeous duets with Jack Savoretti: Anyday Now and Hope. This is seriously good stuff. I can't stop playing it. I'm keeping an eye on the web site - shellypoole.com - in the hope of live dates to support the set. Definitely for fans of Jewel (Pieces of you), Chantal Kreviazuk (Colour moving and still) and even Dido (No Angel). I defy anybody to not be touched by the beauty in these heart driven songs. Amazing! Highly recommended! Album of the month! Album of the year! Also: check out the exclusive b-side bonus tracks on the Little wonder EP on iTunes.
Moving lyrics, haunting melodies, dreamlike compositions, this album is a work of sheer class and demands a place in the must have albums of the year.
Shelly's voice is one minute ethereal, next folky, next pop, next soaring. A voice that will hold you captivated and melt the meaning of the beautiful lyrics into your heart.
From the dreamlike 'Totally Underwater' to the upbeat 'Lose yourself' this album will grab you by the soul and take you on a journey.
The 10-track album is totally gorgeous - each song has it's own vibe & sound - varying from Pop to Folk, making it a really beautiful & easy listening album.
Hard Time For A Dreamer - A beautiful opening song - the vocals are gorgeous, melody is so easy to listen to & lyrics are lovely. It sets the album off perfectly.
Totally Underwater - The 1st single from the album, a real stand-out song. I love the Indie feel to it. It's such an addictive song.
Little Wonder - The latest single from the album. With it's gorgeous harmonies, which are sung so beautifully, it's such a chilling out song.
Out In The Open - A bit of a folky kind of feeling to this song, very catchy & easy listening.
Don't Look That Way - I adore shelly's vocal on this track - the harmonies in the chorus are absolutley beautiful. Very chilled out & easy listening, with meaningful lyrics.
Anyday Now - First of 2 duets from the album with Jack Savoretti. A very country feel to it and very easy listening. The lyrics are beautiful.
