A young boy is kidnapped and a number of policemen are killed in what seems to be a criminal's revenge attacks. These are the two separate threads which are at the heart of this novel.

There is nothing complex in the tales, but Carter delivers her stories with quite a bit of colour. Her lines are good and her stories have real people in them. The lead is a likeable but imperfect Detective Sergeant (Bev Morriss) but Carter does very well in not allowing Bev's life and adventures to dominate the pages. Importantly, too, the scenarios Carter builds are plausible and she doesn't resort to constructing her stories around silly coincidences and super-human efforts.

It would be an exaggeration to say this is a deep and meaningful crime novel; but the novel is well-written and provides a very relaxing and enjoyable read. 9/10

Hard Time is the fourth book for Maureen Carter's feisty but loveable Bev Morris. All of the usual trademarks are there - the sharp, well-observed dialogue, humour, the various twists and turns.

The main plot is about a kidnapping of a small boy, but we also get to see a slightly softer side to Bev (anyone that has read Baby Love will know how it ends and how this one follows on for a while). This is a great read, and I loved to see the softer side to Bev.

The only disappointing thing about this book was the ending - I'd have to disagree with a previous review who said it was an absolute gem. It was a bit of a cop out (no pun intended!), so I'm hoping Maureen carter takes her time before releasing another Bev Morris book. The ending could have been a whole lot better, plus it was blatantly obvious - hence only the four stars.

The fourth outing for Maureen Carter's likeable and feisty anti-heroine, is a delight. All of Ms Carter's trademarks are there - the sharp, well-observed dialogue, the fast-moving action, and, of course, the inimitable Bev with her tangled love-life and her energy and verve.

The kidnapping of a small boy is at the heart of the plot, and the details about the police procedures have clearly been meticulously researched. But there are certain curious aspects to the case that make Bev wonder if this is more than a brutal demand for money in return for a child's life. Woven skilfully into the police team's frantic efforts to find the boy before time runs out, is a case from the past that has reared its unpleasant head, and is now causing the shocking murders of several of the team itself.

The tension is excellently maintained as the story unfolds - with an absolute gem of an ending!

Highly recommended.
