The fourth outing for Maureen Carter's likeable and feisty anti-heroine, is a delight. All of Ms Carter's trademarks are there - the sharp, well-observed dialogue, the fast-moving action, and, of course, the inimitable Bev with her tangled love-life and her energy and verve.
The kidnapping of a small boy is at the heart of the plot, and the details about the police procedures have clearly been meticulously researched. But there are certain curious aspects to the case that make Bev wonder if this is more than a brutal demand for money in return for a child's life. Woven skilfully into the police team's frantic efforts to find the boy before time runs out, is a case from the past that has reared its unpleasant head, and is now causing the shocking murders of several of the team itself.
The tension is excellently maintained as the story unfolds - with an absolute gem of an ending!
Highly recommended.
