Its my own fault for reading the third part of a trilogy first. In my defence i did buy this book at a charity sale, so I feel absolved from blame on that front. However, this is a book I really would not recommend to anyone looking for an involving or stimulating read.
Jeffery Deaver has created a very "cartoonish" story with Hard News. The main character "Rune" reminds me of my Niece asking for more pocket money with her adolescent diction. You'll enjoy how many times she screws up and gets away with it, if it were real life she would have been canned after one mistake. We are supposed to believe that she can rough it with a veteran news team ? I dont think so.
The novel reads as one which is full of convenient coincidences to propel the story and has characters that dont convince you of their nature. The hitman of the story, comes across as cuddly and the "fall guy" is see through to put it mildly. If you manage to maintain interest, it isnt a hard read and will fill a few hours on a holiday somewhere, but for me the far fetched nature of the plot torpedoes the story. Why is it that so many heroines in popular fiction have a boyfriend who works for the police ? Or an old friend who has a drug habit and happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time ? How convenient also that all the protaganists spill their share of the mystery in one room at the conclusion so we know categorically what happened. Cliche, cliche !
For the man who gave us Lincoln Rhyme, I am amazed at how amateur this offering is. Compared to some of Deavers other writing, this one really is a stinker.
