Robert Conrad plays Col J Knox a 'forced to retire' Marine Corps fighter pilot. After getting his wings clipped, Knox is press ganged in to taking the job of overseeing a troubled junior military academy. Red West is his over the top, loyal companion, Master Gunnery Sergeant 'Top' Tuttle, whose role is to help transform the various troublemakers, jokers and rogues into a well-oiled machine in time to win a major competition against another nearby academy. The main problem is…he has only two weeks to do it. Total fun for all the family.

4.0 out of 5 stars Made for TV 7 Sep 2010
Its a really nice made for TV programme. A retired fighter pilot becomes the head of his former school for two weeks with hilarious results. He shapes up the school and raises morale so that they are able to win the "Brass Axe"
competition against another local military academy. The Music is by Mike Post, who composed the "Rockford Files".

3.0 out of 5 stars New Commander Heals poorly performing Unit 30 Jan 2006

Where to begin?

In the first place, some descriptions of "Hard Knox" on the 'net are in error. The DVD cover portrays Robert Conrad in an Airforce ROTC uniform with the Lockheed F-35 newest All purpose vertical landing fighter behind him. F-35? Air Force ROTC? Air Force? None of this has the Slightest thing to do with the story inside!

Regardless of the DVD Cover this story is about Ace MARINE Bird Colnel(sp?) Fighter Pilot INSTRUCTOR (Call sign: 'Hard Knox') who is instantly medically grounded. A thirty year career of flying instantly grounded.

Now what does he do? He returns to the only home he has ever known, a military school... The Military school is in shambles and will be closed due to lack of real control if 'somebody' doesn't do something.

Hard Knox is put on the spot to run things for TWO WEEKS during his ACTIVE DUTY leave (the published description sez that he is retired). Who joins him in this endeavor but his life/career long right-hand-man his maintenance chief.... (same main flight line crew chief as he had as 'Pappy Boyington' had in Baa Baa Black Sheep).

So here we have two hardened MARINES to manage a failing Marine oriented military school. (Look for the 'commandant' and his dining room call to announcements - Oh Brother!)

Unexpected plot twists and excellent work by the actors rescue an obviously c-budget story. The Story is really well portrayed but the photography and ambience is a study in amaturish production.

Worth a looksee if you like sucess stories.

Man, when does all this crying stop?

Well, I cried for two weeks. I had a room-mate that cried for two years.

Major oops. In the opening sequence they show F-4 Phantom aircraft from VMAF 312 (V-Fixed wing M-Marine F-Fighter A-Attack squadron number 312) After landing they suddenly become VMFAT 101 (T-Training).

Similar plot to The private war of Major Benson - Fireball Forward - and 12 O'clock High - to name a few.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hard Knox 29 Dec 2009

Hard Knox is a cute fun movie that we had taped around 1986 on New Years Eve with our first VCR. The taping was not the best and we probably wore it out anyway. My son had acquired a replacement tape online but its quality was poor, worse than our worn out original.
I found and purchased the DVD online from and have been pleased with the quality. I would rate the quality as that which would have been produced around 1986. It's not what I would call digitally remastered (probably no demand for it to be done); but the quality is quite acceptable. If the quality were digitally remastered, I would have given a 5-star rating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good old family movie with great values and lessons for us all. 3 Nov 2010

Years ago we saw this on The Disney Channel. It's worth seeing again! Very good (though a little dated) story about kids at a military school, their reasons for being there as diverse as the kids themselves. When 'Hard Knox' is appointed to be the officer in charge, his tough but fair attitude, coupled with love and respect for traditions, the school, and the kids, changes them all immeasurably. Follow the kids as they go from desperately lonely and 'me-centered' to proud (the good kind) and caring and willing to function as a team. Great lessons and fun to watch. I'm very pleased to have found this copy for our library of videos.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it --- great family movie 9 April 2013

I live in Mt. Carroll IL and know the campus of Shimer College (the military school well). Also the Caroline Mark Home (the nursing home) has been a place dear to our hearts for many many years.

This movie is a joy to watch for the whole family. Some of our local boys were cast as extras and the boy who plays the trumpet 'sorta good' was actually a very accomplished musician with our local high school band. He said one of the hardest things to do was to learn to play 'bad'.

One last thing..............seeing Mr. Conrad come accross the Savanna/Sebula bridge in that vintage corvette was very exciting.

A lot of years have passed since this first came out but it has stood the sands of time. You won't be a good clean wholesome movie that can be enjoyed by whole family.
