Product Description

Review

A clear, imaginative and fascinating illumination of the stories we thought we knew.

Product Description

"Tatar's main concern is with the enduring hold of the tales on children's imaginations. Why should they enjoy stories about other children sent out to die in a wood, or being victimized by cruel stepmothers, or given impossible tasks to perform, and (if female) forced to marry frogs or bears? . . . The Hard Facts of the Grimms' Fairy Tales--related in language that is sharp, lively, and free of jargon--is delightful evidence that Grimm scholarship can give pleasure to the general reader." --Janet Adam Smith, New York Review of Books "For scholars, students, and general readers, Tatar's book is a balanced, sensitive, and informative guide to the content and context of Grimms' fairy tales." --Merle Rubin, The Christian Science Monitor" . . . intelligently eclectic and refreshingly commonsensical, a thoughtful ramble through the dark childhood woods that haunt our adult dreams."--Carl Maves, San Francisco Chronicle

There are quite a few books out there that explore the Grimm fairy tales - many of which focus on one particular area (e.g. violence in fairy tales, sexuality of Little Red Riding Hood etc). This book by Maria Tatar has got to be the best book I've read on the subject of fairy tales: it looks at meaning and interpretation of all aspects of fairy tales so it's quite broad in focus without skimping on the detail.

It's a really intelligent read and what is so appealing about the book is the fact that the author's style of writing is so accessible - she writes informally but with authority. You never feel 'bogged down' and yet there is so much being explored and emparted to the reader. Whether you are a student looking for something analytical in the area or just a casual reader interested in the Grimm fairy tales, this book is an absolute must! Highly recommended!

A very well written, approachable discussion of the history of the Grimms fairy tales, and analysis of the meaning of those tales. This seems to me to be a very well balanced interpretation ofthe fairy tales, without the author stressing their own interpretations at the expense of others for their own agenda as seems to be so common in this type of book.

Well worth the money

Hard Facts 16 Aug 2011

I was dissappointed in how dreary this was put together. Some of the real gorey tales are so grotesque that the author should have spent more time on these points and not so much on talking around the tales. Historically it's interesting too but be patient it takes a while to come across these gems. I have only got about half way through this book and have not been in the right mood to pick it up again but I am determined to finish it as I want to produce a piece of art work that reflects some of the Grimm's tales.
