Biography

"The story began in Harold Macmillan’s “never had it so good” ’50s Britain. It should be fiction: four teenagers with no more than eight O’Levels between them, running and biking and busing and busking all over Liverpool in search of new chords and old guitars and half-decent drum kit and any gig at all.

They were determined to amount to something ... Read more in Amazon's The Beatles Store

Product Description

Strummmmm! That dramatic guitar chord that kicks of A Hard Day's Night (album, song, movie) still jumps right out at you, slaps you in the face, and jump-starts your heart. And you know what? Both the music and the film are still as crisp and lively as they were in 1964. Of course, only the first seven songs are actually in the movie (and they are the strongest of the bunch, from the rousing rock & roll of title track and the hit single "Can't Buy Me Love", to the beautiful ballads "If I Fell" and "And I Love Her"). But nobody's going to complain about having songs like "I'll Cry Instead" and "Things We Said Today" in the second half of the record; they certainly don't feel like leftovers. Yet another high-point for John, Paul, George, and Ringo--four fab fellows who hit the highest heights imaginable. --Jim Emerson

BBC Review

There may be more inventive Beatles records – Sgt. Pepper’s, for example – and there may be lusher ones – Abbey Road, for one. But no one Beatles album better encapsulated the essence of the band than this one.

A Hard Day’s Night not only captures The Beatles at the peak of Beatlemania – the most exciting time in pop music up to that moment, and arguably ever since; when continents fell and music was changed forever – but also sees them perfecting the art of pop. You may have Beatles songs that you prefer, or songs that mean more to you, but nowhere were the group more consistently brilliant than on this soundtrack.

Where the film emphasised just how popular and bizarre their fame was, the accompanying album showed us just why this had happened. The title-track – with surely the most surreal name ever for a number one song – dazzles in a way The Byrds, The Monkees, The La’s and a hundred other janglers never could, while And I Love Her proved that the band could write melodies better than anyone else. Even the song they let George sing, I’m Happy Just to Dance With You, is fizzier than actual bubbles, while Lennon’s vocal (and rhythm solo) on You Can’t Do That saw him trounce The Rolling Stones for sheer snottiness.

This was the first and only Beatles album to be entirely composed of Lennon/McCartney songs, and that unheard-of-in-1964 cockiness shines through. Even the wistful songs – Things We Said Today and I’ll Be Back – were more confident than sad. This is, next to the White Album (a very different kettle of fabs), my favourite Beatles album, and has been ever since I heard it. The exuberance of the 1960s, the genius of The Beatles, and the total unstoppable confidence of the best band in the world realising that they were the best band in the world, are all contained here. Essential.

--David Quantick

5.0 out of 5 stars Musical Brilliance 30 Oct 2003
Format:Audio CD
A Hard Day's Night is my favourite Beatle's album. The opening chord, one of the most recognisable in pop music, sets up an album which is full of classic tracks. The harmonies between Lennon and McCartney work perfectly throughout the album. The use of the harmonica on 'I Should Have Known Better' suits the song perfectly. George's guitar work on 'And I Love Her' helps make the song one of McCartney's best ballads. The tracks which did not appear in the movie are still great Beatle's songs. 'I'll Be Back' is a beautiful, thoughtful Lennon track which ends the album in style. The album stands the test of time and remains a classic.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Hard Album To Put Down... 22 Dec 2006
Format:Audio CD
This is the Beatles' third album, and is the first one where every song has been written by the Beatles themselves. And what a good effort!

Not only does the album begin with probably one of the most famous Beatles songs ever, with that exact unidentifiable chord being struck to begin the highly-charged 'A Hard Day's Night', which came from a Ringo-ism, but this album also contains quite a huge number of songs that could quite easily have been singles and done very well in the charts - 'I Should Have Known Better', 'If I Fell', 'Things We Said Today' (which is one of my all-time favourite Beatles songs!) and 'I'll Be Back'. And of course the equally well-known 'Can't Buy Me Love' certainly does the album no harm.

There are quite a range of songs on this album - from the almost old-style rock 'n' roller 'I'm Happy Just To Dance With You', to the quite Bluesy 'I'll Cry Instead', to the love ballad of 'And I Love Her', and this album really does show the true potential of the Beatles as songwriters as every song has something to offer.

This album is worth getting for the high quality of all the songs alone, but I think it is the first album the Beatles did which has so many potential hits, something which they pride themselves on in future albums.

In my opinion:

Best Song = "Things We Said Today"

Weakest Song = "Any Time At All".

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant early album 13 Feb 2004
By Peter Durward Harris #1 HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
This was the first Beatles album to contain exclusively original material. There are no George Harrison songs either - John and Paul wrote all the songs here. The first seven songs were featured in the film (including Can't buy me love, which had already been a hit) while the remaining six were also written for the film but were not used in it. Thus, only twelve of the thirteen were new recordings, although the other track was making its album debut here.

Apart from Can't buy me love, the album yielded just one other Beatles hit - the title track. However, several other songs here have retained their popularity, helped by some quality cover versions. I've heard excellent covers of I should have known better, If I fell, I'm happy just to dance with you, And I love her and Things we said today as well as the two hits, some of them in several different styles.

This is, perhaps, the strongest of the early Beatles albums prior to Rubber soul. If you are interested in the early part of their career and you want more than is available on the red album 1962 - 1966, this is essential.
