CD Description
Hard Curves is the debut solo album by Brynovsky. It is a contemporary European take on roots style reggae but also looks back to the popular instrumentals of 60s and early 70s Jamaica. The ten tracks, focused around original basslines are laden with fizzing percussion, dance grooves and laid-back atmospheres. Melodies multiply and weave around the rhythms and the sounds of dub creep in and out. Influences pour in from guitar-rich American and European music alongside reggae greats like Augustus Pablo, Mikey Dread and Bob Marley. This is thoughtful music and the beginnings of a new body of work emerging from South-West Scotland. Expect a heavy dub version in the spring and much more in the future. The opener, Trip to You , with its big melodica theme has been used as the title music for the classic Monday night Reggae Show on Sunny Govan Radio in Glasgow. Next comes the heavyweight dub oriented title track. Then 'Mischief', a snappy tune with a hard beat and some funky syncopation. The epic atmospheres of Into a Dream seem to echo Morricone while Conspiracy' contrasts with minimal simplicity and rolling rhythm. 'If You Want Some' is a fine blend of melodica groove and spacey electronic overlay while 'Get You' bounces along with 80's synths and a steppers swing beat. The atmospherics return in the shape of 'Step in the Cloud' with cool Hammond, sparse clavinet and minimal beat. Spooks picks you up again with its lilted rhythm and crazy energy from synth and guitar. Finally, Ninth Orbit turns up a Hammond-pulsating and super-chilled spacious finale that leaves you wanting more. All tracks written, produced and engineered by Tim Brynovsky. Recorded and Mixed in Scotland. Mastered at Wavemill.
