5.0 out of 5 stars Building the Supporting Class 16 Sep 2014
Format:Paperback
While Vol. 1 of Harbinger introduced the series main series protagonists in an extended origin story arc, the second volume of the series introduces us to the team of super-powered teens that will back Peter Stanchek in his war against Harada. Here again, there is a lot to like. Joshua Dysart, in another fantastic outing on this book uses each issue in reprinted here to fully introduce each individual character. This is the kind of deep character moments often missing from even the best series.

Issue #6, the first in the collection is the real gem in terms of pacing and ideas. It's the further developing of Kris Hathaway (the only member of the Renegades team, other than Peter, introduced in the previous arc.) Dysart has demonstrated a genuine affection for the witty, intelligent center of the team. Expect big things in the future from her.

Issue #7 is the Charlene "Flamingo" issue. At first glance a white trash little vixen, who ultimately ends up showing both an incredible amount of strength and will and also a surprising amount of unexpected intelligence.

Issue #8 is John Torkelson, the character that has been altered most by the relaunch of the Harbinger title, and definitely the one most in need of it. While I find the type of person nauseating in real life, Dysart throws us the curve ball of introducing the idea that Torque, John's alter ego is merely a holographic projection, while the man inside is actually a paraplegic who has spent nearly his entire life living out a fantasy in his head. Deep stuff for such a shallow dude.

Issue #9 is Faith Herbert's time to shine and it's my personal favorite of the lot. Faith is the member of the team most often taken for granted and maligned both due to her naive nature and her anti-Fasion model size.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the very best 29 Sep 2013
Format:Paperback
In Harbinger volume 2 Pete, Kris and Faith embark on a journey to recruit allies to take on the powerful Toyo Harada and his Harbinger Foundation. Each chapter brilliantly interweaves the plot with background stories on each character. By the end the book the whole team is formed but are they ready for their first battle when Project Rising Spirit catches up with them?

For me this book solidified Joshua Dysart as one of my absolute favourite writers in the comic book medium. The art in the book features the work of Phil Briones, Matthew Clark, Khari Evans, Lee Garbett, Barry Kitson and Pere Perez. They all do a great job with their sections of the book. I really can't recommend this book enough. It's hard to describe in words just how awesome this one is. By the end of it you'll know a lot more about these characters and you'll be dying to get your hands on volume 3.

SPOILER ALERT: If you haven't already read Harbinger vol. 1, turn back before reading this review!

This is the best comic series I've read in years. Seriously. I whole-heartedly recommend it to every one of my comic reading friends. Every one that takes me up on it agrees the writing is a step above the rest. Why? The characterization is flawless. The characters are all believable. No one is black or white; it's all beautiful, believable shades of grey. Their motives, desires, insecurities... not one of them is one-dimensional, and not one of them is purely good or purely bad.

At the end of volume 1, Pete was pretty well beaten down by the Harbinger folks. He only escaped with the help of Faith Herbert, the fun loving, high flying chubby girl with a love of all things nerdy.

This entire arc focuses on one character per issue, while still moving the larger story forward.

Issue #6 reintroduces a familiar face from issue 1, Pete's old childhood friend Kris. We learn that her dad lost his job and her family lost their health care. After a family illness, they now owe more money to the hospital that they could ever hope to repay, and yet they cling to hope. Kris is jaded and angry about the whole thing. She is also still really angry and confused by what happened in the first arc (go read it!) but she reluctantly decides to help Faith and Pete. By then end of the issue, we realize that yeah, she doesn't have psiot abilities, but she might just be the most powerful of the bunch.

Issue #7 introduces us to Charlene Dupre, a down on her luck exotic dancer. Pete is now searching for latent psiots, and his search brings him to Charlene. Watch as her world catches fire, it's one heck of a show.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than Volume1! 23 Sep 2013
By JoelG
Format:Paperback
In this second volume, Harbinger 6-10 is reprinted and it is even better than the first volume. In the aftermath of Volume 1, we are introduced to the Renegades, more Psiots that will all work together, but to what end.

Faith (who was introduced in Volume 1) joins Peter while he recruits others like him. While there are battles and more story is revealed as you proceed, this is all about building the characters up, Showing who they are, their motivations. I could not be happier with this title! Everyone is unique, and I cannot wait for the next issue of this series every month!
