Biography

A singer, poet, songwriter, activist, and composer; Serj Tankian has always created music as an outlet to express his thoughts and feelings with a level of passion and consciousness that few in today’s world of music can rival. An Armenian immigrant born in Lebanon and re-rooted in Los Angeles, Tankian was introduced to the melding of cultures, ideas and ideals from a very young age. The ... Product Description

This is the third full-length solo release from the enigmatic Lebanese-born Armenian-American singer–songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, poet, and political activist Serj Tankian. Perhaps best known for his role as the frontman for Californian rock band System of a Down, Tankian also produced the album, which features his touring band The F.C.C.

Harakiri is the third canonical full-length studio album by System Of A Down front-man Serj Tankian as a solo artist (he has released EPs, live output and a collaborative album with Arto Tunçboyac'yan as well however).

It was released in the summer of 2012, lasts around 45 minutes and was self-produced by Tankian. The album was written, in an almost Trent Rezonor-like move, by painstakingly assembling new songs out of thousands of samples from his previous albums on an iPad.

Some people will hate this album. If you've always disliked Serj's personal politics (or agreed with them but wished he'd keep them out of the music) then lyrics about Occupy Wall Street and corporate corruption are going to be a sore spot. If you seriously disliked some of the musical moves Serj made with his previous album there are parts of that sound still on here, and if you come from a more metal background there is relatively little metal on this album at all. Furthermore, If you've ever said that some artist or other has disappeared up their own backside or became too pretentious, then this is an album that you may want to approach with caution so as to avoid disappointment.

If you have heard the album's first single 'Figure It Out' and were very excited by its musical direction, with the chugging and double-kicks, then you may be disappointed to know that it is actually a little out of place on the album, and that there are really only two more tracks that are in any way similar, those being the album's final two tracks. You get some punky, almost Crossover Thrash sections scattered throughout those three tracks, although obviously through the filter of Serj's solo career style.

Elsewhere, stylistically, the album as a whole is a bit of a mixed bag.

For years, System of a Down stood out to me amung a slew of so-so metal bands almost entirely because of the odd sense of humour and political messages. their last two albums, Mesmerise and Hypnotise respectively, are two of my favourite albums from the last decade. So .. now does Harakiri stack up?

Surprisingly well, especially given the almost complete lack of production values (a fact that rarely becomes aparant, though hearing certain Garage Band loops standing out is always discourging... hearing the same 3 notes that have appeared in jingle for radio shows and Tesco store ads doesnt half through you out of an album). While there are a few weaker tracks that devolve in a slew of agressive rants as polictal ideology start stifling better judgement, most of the album presents tracks that maintain a familar mix of rapid speed changes, odd sense of humour and politcal angling that hallmarked the better SOAD albums.

While never quite hitting the same hieghts as the last two SOAD albums, there is still a lot to like here, and the title track is fantastic. Very glad i took a chance on the purchase

Anyone who's a fan of system of a down may be a little disappointed with serj's solo albums as a whole, but anyone who is fan of rock music with a purpose will really enjoy this album. With some strong beats, guitar lines and vocal hooks, it is definitely an album worth looking into.

This is just a fantastic album from start to finish. Systems first album gave us a big clue that this guy has it all, power, range and a simply stunning voice. This album highlights Serj's talents quite beautifully. From opener Cornucopia to closer Weave On there is not a single weak or filler track on offer. Freed from any restrictions of being in a band, Serj has created a masterpiece he may not be able to surpass (please prove me wrong!!!!). From all out rockers to ballads, there's a quirky number or two on offer for good measure. Don't just take my word for it, buy it.

After being disappointed by the very bland 2nd album "Imperfect Harmonies" it's good to see Serj Tankian back to what he does best. Unlike his last outing, the songs on this album have real character and will stick in your head for a long time even after first hearing them, much like the songs off his first album. Serj has never made the same album twice, and this one is no exception. He tries new sounds, while still keeping his signature style and lyricism. Fans will not be disappointed and new comers may well find this album more approachable than others in the past.

Very good delivery service. CD arrived quickly and not damaged. Serj is a great singer and writer. His lyrics have a lot to say. Highly recommended for people who don't want just to listen to the music but want to learn about themselves and others and want to share more awareness what is happening around us.

As a big fan of System, i thought I would follow Serj into his next project, but where SOTD is angry and energetic I found this album mournful and sad, almost as if the wind has been knocked out of him. Some of the tunes are good but sound defeated rather than rebellious. Its Ok. But did not inspire.
