Book Description

31 Dec 1991 Judo Masterclass Techniques
Harai-goshi has been one of the central throws of judo since the very early days of the sport. It was introduced by Jigoro Kano, the founder of judo, as a shrewd combination with a hip throw but it wasn't long before it was regarded as a throw in its own right. It is widely used in both competition and general club practice.

Jean-luc Rouge, technical director of the French Judo Federation, is without question, the finest exponent of the throw in the last 20 years. Tall but powerful, he had the classic build for the throw, and it was the technique he used in winning his World Championship title in 1975.

In this fascinating exposition on harai-goshi, Rouge follows the basic pattern of all the Masterclass Techniques series, looking at his personal affinity for the throw, its history, the techniques, combinations, defences and counters, as well as its self-defence applications. He concludes with chapters on training and a collection of stimulating competition pictures.

But, in his individual Gallic manner, he lends a special flavour to his discussion of harai-goshi. Rather than settling down a rigid step-by-step guide, he offers certain basic rules for gripping, entries and directions of throws and leaves it up to the reader to put together a blueprint that suits his or her own build, stance and personal preferences.

In that sense, Harai-Goshi is not only a book on specific technique, but rather, an insight into a thougtful and creative view of judo--a view which produced one of the most exciting and technically accomplished products of French judo.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent technical manual 20 April 2011
Format:Paperback
This book consists of 8 chapters and is of course focused on a single judo technique - Harai Goshi. Despite having less than 100 pages, the book is packed with information and many photographs illustrating the application of Harai Ghoshi and related techniques in many different settings.
The book starts with a short 2-page chapter describing the authors personal view of the throw, including describing how he used the throw during his career. Another short chapter on the history of the technique then follows, which does include some nice descriptions of the application of the technique.
However the main bulk of the book really starts on Chapter 3 which considers the techniques necessary to implement the throw. Amongst other things, the grips, stepping patterns, and hip position for the throw are all covered. Chapter 4 then goes on to discuss combinations, showing how the throw can be implemented in combination with other techniques. Chapter 5 entitled counters discusses how Harai-goshi can be used as a counter against other techniques. This is followed by Chapter 6 which is my favorite chapter entitled training for Harai-goshi. This covers a variety of exercises, most of which are solo exercises (against a wall) that can be used as training for this throw, and although this chapter is only 5 pages long it really is very interesting. Although it is noted that the author uses a padded wall to illustrate some of these training techniques, so the reader might need to improvise to apply some of the techiques himself. A short chapter on how Harai-goshi might be used in self defence follows, before finally a chapter describing how harai goshi has been used in competition judo. This chapter includes many illustrations showing the throw being put into practice, along with a brief description of each provided by the author. And while this last chapter is entertaining (and inspiring!), it does little (in my humble opinion) to provide any technical guidance.

In conclusion this book provides an an excellent discussion of the application of Harai-Goshi. I have found it to be a good source of information to dip into when i need some new ideas.
