Book Description

7 Jan 2010

A fresh and practical guide to successfully managing children’s behaviour – from babies to young adults.

Cathy Glass has been a foster carer for over 20 years, during this time fostering more than 50 children, as well as bringing up three of own. Many of these children have had severe behavioural difficulties and have come to Cathy as a last resort, when their parents or carers were no longer able to cope.

Drawing on a combination of years of training and extensive personal experience, in this comprehensive guide, Cathy passes on her tried and tested methods for guiding, nurturing and disciplining children.

Approaching child development chronologically, this book guides you through Cathy's incredibly simple and effective 3Rs technique: Request, Repeat and Reassure.

Within this framework, Cathy addresses a host of childcare issues, including, amongst others, why children misbehave and what parents can do to the change this, how diet can affect children's behaviour, what parents can do to avoid sibling rivalry, and how to spot and address the behavioural symptoms of special needs such as dyslexia, autism, ADHD and bipolar.

Applicable to all age groups - from newborn babies to young adults - Happy Kids is a clear and concise guide to raising confident, well-behaved and happy children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy Kids 27 May 2010
Format:Paperback
This is yet another fantastic book by the very experienced Cathy Glass. The book is very easy to read, follow and has a great quick reference guide too.

I honestly think this book is a must for all people involved in looking after children should it be your own or children you look after in whatever capacitiy.

I now apply the 3R's to my own children and children I care for and can honestly verify that Cathy's 3R technique does work whatever the childrens age or behaviour problem. I am sure it will work for you too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading 11 Jan 2010
By Bill
Format:Paperback
This is the book I have been hoping Cathy Glass would write so others can benefit from her wide experience in looking after and raising children. I have read many of her other books and this new one is in the same clear and easy to read style that she is noted for. Although there are many books on raising children it is refreshing to find one of such practical use with a clearly explained technique that really works and can be used by all parents. I think many behavioural problems would be avoided completely or resolved at an early stage before becoming more serious problems if this book is widely read and the 3Rs system she explains is used. An excellent book and one that deserves to be yet another best seller from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good sound advice 3 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
This is the first book by Cathy Glass that I have read. Being a busy mum I often question the approach I have with my children. Discipline is important but it is not always obvious what the best approach is. I really like the calm approach Cathy advises we take. She stresses that shouting or losing our cool will not work in the long run. While we all know that, it is very useful to be reminded and hopefully we can remember this when we can feel our patience growing thin.
I also really liked being reminded to praise more than to criticize. Once again we get so caught up in daily life and busy running of the house that we forget to enjoy our children and praise them. Cathy reminds us to congratulate and reward our children as well and that this is important.
I think the chapter I liked best was the one on Difficult Children. In it Cathy states some of the way children can overstep the mark and take over. As a busy parent and former single mum, I have often found myself overwhelmed and it has been easier to let some things drift. Unfortunately over time I have "forgotten" what is the appropriate attitude and what is not. Cathy's clear description of the different things children should not be doing was really helpful and helped me a lot.
I think this is a book to read once and then keep as a reference as children change and the way we interract with them evolves. It is a sort of reference book that can help us for many years. Thank you for that.
