Adele Parks, one of the UK's most respected and prolific writers of popular womens' fiction has penned a 'quick read' book which aims to get the nation reading by providing a short, snappy novel. Therefore, it was never aiming to be War and Peace, but I did find the large font and narrative rather akin to a child's book.

Fair play to Parks, the story which centres around divorcee Lisa and her young family zips along at a cracking pace. The characterisation is somewhat flat though and I kept wanting to give the main character a good talking to at some points, but otherwise I'm sure that the subject matter will be familiar to the majority of female readers.

I love Adele Park's novels so I was pleased to pick up this slim volume, which turned out to be totally unlike her usual sharp, sophisticated novels. With it's large print, simplistic language and plot I'm not sure who this kind of thing is aimed - adults with literacy problems maybe? - I felt it should maybe carried some sort of warning that this is Adele seriously dumbed down. It was still an ok read though it strayed deeply into idiot plot territory with the whole storyline about Lisa's pregnancy. I know that Lisa, unlike Adele's usual heroines, works in a chippie and hasn't got much education but surely no sane adult woman who had already given birth three times would mistake a pregnancy for going through the change (at 42 ???). Are we supposed to believe that the birth of every one of her children came as a complete and utter surprise? Ok, she's in denial I totally get that but - given that she is actually 42 and not 14 surely she would realise that some things don't go away just like that? Having said that it was a pleasant enough read, Adele still seems to have that Midas touch as a writer which makes everything she writes a joy to read.
