5.0 out of 5 stars Happy Dog, Sad Dog, Hardly Left on the Book Shelf Dog, 7 Mar 2005
By A Customer
This book was a first birthday present for my daughter. When I first saw it I thought it seemed a bit simplistic. How wrong was I!! This is a terrific book. My daughter takes it off the book shelf every day to have it read to her. The premise is simple, using opposites to describe the dogs. Our favourites are Hot Dog, Cold Dog, Clean Dog, Dirrrty Dog. The colours are vivid, the text straightfoward, and the dogs are charming. It's not too long, and you can do voices and actions to go along with the text. It certainly captures a child's imagination. It's a great book to help with counting skills and we've found that it translates and travels well!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful book, 2 Jun 2007

We got this book free in the Bookstart pack we were given by our Health Visitor when my baby was 6 weeks old. Even at this young age my son is captivated by "Happy Dog Sad Dog" thanks to the vivid colours and contrasts of the pictures. A wonderful first book that should continue to be a favourite as he grows.
I would also recommend other Sam Lloyd titles. We have "Calm Down Boris" and "Hello Dudley" which, although not quite suitable for our son yet, had both me and my husband in stitches when we first read it. As soon as baby is old enough to appreciate them, I'm sure they'll become favourite reads for all of us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant first book for babies, 31 Oct 2004
By Miss L Rickett (Southampton, Hants United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This was one of the first books I read to my daughter. The simple concept of opposites coupled with the bold illustrations made it seem a more appropriate read for a baby, yet I know we will continue to get a lot out of it as she gets older (counting, colours, comparison etc). And it is just fun to read aloud - especially saying 'Dirty Dog' in your best James Cagney!

A great choice as a child's first book. Our daughter loved it, and I always enjoyed reading it for her and doing the actions I made up to go with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy dog, laughing dog
This book always has my son (14 months) in stitches, cackling away like a magpie. I'm not sure if it's the great illustrations, which are really fun, or the actions I do to try to... Read more
