This book was a first birthday present for my daughter. When I first saw it I thought it seemed a bit simplistic. How wrong was I!! This is a terrific book. My daughter takes it off the book shelf every day to have it read to her. The premise is simple, using opposites to describe the dogs. Our favourites are Hot Dog, Cold Dog, Clean Dog, Dirrrty Dog. The colours are vivid, the text straightfoward, and the dogs are charming. It's not too long, and you can do voices and actions to go along with the text. It certainly captures a child's imagination. It's a great book to help with counting skills and we've found that it translates and travels well!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful book 2 Jun 2007
Format:Board book
We got this book free in the Bookstart pack we were given by our Health Visitor when my baby was 6 weeks old. Even at this young age my son is captivated by "Happy Dog Sad Dog" thanks to the vivid colours and contrasts of the pictures. A wonderful first book that should continue to be a favourite as he grows.

I would also recommend other Sam Lloyd titles. We have "Calm Down Boris" and "Hello Dudley" which, although not quite suitable for our son yet, had both me and my husband in stitches when we first read it. As soon as baby is old enough to appreciate them, I'm sure they'll become favourite reads for all of us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy dog, laughing dog 22 Feb 2005
By A Customer
Format:Board book
This book always has my son (14 months) in stitches, cackling away like a magpie. I'm not sure if it's the great illustrations, which are really fun, or the actions I do to try to supplement the meaning of the words. The board book is also really tough and copes with unsupervised reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant first book for babies 31 Oct 2004
Format:Board book
This was one of the first books I read to my daughter. The simple concept of opposites coupled with the bold illustrations made it seem a more appropriate read for a baby, yet I know we will continue to get a lot out of it as she gets older (counting, colours, comparison etc). And it is just fun to read aloud - especially saying 'Dirty Dog' in your best James Cagney!

5.0 out of 5 stars Helped our twins with their first words 7 Jun 2012
Format:Board book
A very clever book despite being so simple! My twin girls still love this aged 3 but from the age of 1 or so this was the book we got out every evening. It really helped with their communication and expression of feelings at an age where they were just learning to speak and feed themselves more. All the funny actions and noises from them and me while reading came in useful in real situations! Hot and cold, happy and sad, and clean and dirty were particularly useful opposites!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous! 11 Jun 2011
Format:Board book
I've bought so many of these for other people I've lost count now. And I know that they in turn have recommended it and bought it for others, too.
Such a simple concept. Opposites represented by bold colourful pictures of dogs and very few words. Big Dog (said in a loud gruff voice) and Little Dog (said in a little high-pitched one) conveyed the idea of size in moments and truly delighted a child trying to make sense of the world. It's a lovely, lovely book and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy grand daughter 14 Jan 2011
Format:Board book
This book appealed because it featured dogs. My grand daughter (5 months) enjoyed looking at the pictures and her mother was able to talk about the contents.
