This is a great picture book about a witch's magical birthday party. First Winnie gets ready for the celebration and my children love the way Winnie's invitations all fly out of the window into the moonlit night in a flurry of multi-coloured stars. All children love parties and the illustrations of the delights laid out for the party guests, the red and yellow bunting, the stripey marquee and the maze are particularly enticing. Winnie's relations are funny, arriving with a range of presents including a magic carpet, and then playing games like musical broomsticks. The finale of the party, and the book too, is the magnificent birthday cake, a multi-tiered colourful cake of such fantastic dimensions my children's eyes grow wider than I thought possible. It's drawn on a pull-out page that stretches as mouthwateringly high as your child's arm can reach. How on earth is Winnie going to blow those candles out!? The pictures in this Winnie the Witch book are softer and brighter than the original story, and you'll notice lots of amusing things happening in them: we like Wilbur the cat's bow tie but we aren't sure how much he helps with the cooking for the party. This is a brilliant strong addition to the Winnie series. OUTSTANDING!
