Book Description

Bestselling author of The Happiness Trap, Russ Harris joins forces with acclaimed illustrator Bev Aislett to produce an illustrated, shorter version of the original, hugely popular book.

From the Back Cover

Learn how to stop struggling for perfect happiness and instead lead a richer life

Commonplace ideas about happiness are often misleading, inaccurate and likely to make you miserable in the long-term. For example, positive thinking often does not work - and research shows it actually makes some people feel worse! So, open The Happiness Trap Pocketbook and learn how a new, scientifically-proven, mindfulness-based approach called acceptance and commitment therapy (better known as ACT), can help you find genuine wellbeing and fulfilment.

Whether you're lacking confidence, facing illness, stressed at work, struggling with low self-esteem, trying to lose weight or to stop smoking, or just want to be happier and healthier, this book can help. Based on the international bestseller The Happiness Trap, this wonderfully illustrated book is a unique collaboration between ACT expert Dr Russ Harris and cartoonist/author Bev Aisbett, and offers a simplified pocketbook version of Russ' original book. You will learn how to:

Reduce stress and worry

Rise above defeat, doubt and insecurity

Deal with painful thoughts and feelings more effectively

Break self-defeating habits

Develop self-acceptance and self-compassion

Let go of inaccurate and misleading ideas about happiness

Create a rich, full and meaningful life.

Dr Russ Harris is the author of bestselling self-help book The Happiness Trap, which has been translated into twenty-eight languages and sold xxx copies worldwide. Bev Aisbett is an artist, counsellor and author of several self-help books on anxiety.

This is not like other self help books i have seen, although I am not an aficionado as I tend to be snotty about fast fixes for the psyche. However, it is based on reliable research and the techniques in it do genuinely work. It's not a book to read through, though - it is a workbook where you pause and try to practise ways of stopping tormenting yourself and getting on with life, an outcome which many people would like. The basic premise is that into each life some rain must fall and attempting Positive Thinking is only going to make things worse. Paradoxically, accepting this is the start of learning to live comfortably with rainfall.

I already own Russ' other books as I find his style very easy going. This small pictorial edition of The Happiness Trap is a handy little refresher when needed, and can easily be read in one longish sitting if needed, which makes it perfect for those times when life starts beating you down again.

This pictorial summary of the original book guides the reader, even young readers, through six dimensions of our daily living. Russ Harris' compassionate understanding and therapeutic expertise comes to life through the images that go beyond our usual thoughts about problems and solutions. Language can often betray us and not many people understand that thinking is not necessarily our friend. We need more than thinking. The author and the artist guide us through evidence based 'acceptance and commitment therapy' and 'relational frame theory' in simple ways to help us to develop psychological flexibility. Psychological flexibility is probably the most useful quality in developing a life worth living and helps us to remove the 'happiness trap' that seems to afflict us all. The book takes us through the steps of awareness, acceptance, creating distinctions, seeing our 'self' differently, and taking values based action (my summary) that constitute psychological flexibility. Recommended especially as a download to access easily during the day.

Brilliantly written, yet simple and easy to follow. I have suffered from anxiety for the past couple of years, however after reading this book, completing all of the exercises it suggests and regularly practicing the techniques within this book I feel much more at ease and actually less anxious. Highly recommended to anyone suffering from depression, anxiety or stress.

This version of The Happiness Trap is more accessible than the conventional book. ACT is visual and experiential and this book makes it easier to understand and practice. Quite a few typo's though!
