With both `Toto' front-men Joseph Williams and Bobby Kimball having re-emerged with new projects in 2011 ("Williams-Firestedt" and "Kimball Jamison" respectively) it is only fitting that Fergie Frederiksen puts out his own melodic rock proposition.
"Happiness is the road" features songwriting contributions by David Roberts, Gui Oliver,`Survivor' mastermind Jim Peterik, `Work of Art' multi-instrumentalist Robert Sall. The performing line-up features beyond Fergie, guitarist Nathan Eshman, drummer Dirk Bruinenberg, keyboardist Eric Ragno and bassist Denis Ward who also handles production qualities on "Happiness is the road".
From the impressive cast of musicians, one should expect nothing less than a quality melodic rock/AOR creation and that is exactly what "Happiness..." is. The album is filled with infectious choruses for the biggest part conveying a positive message, complemented by stimulating instrumental melodies. Fergie appears to be in great vocal shape shining throughout the album delivering such highlights as "Elaine", "Happiness is the road", "I still believe", "Lyin eyes", "Writing on the wall" and the remake of "First to cry" (originally performed on the latest "House of Lords" album "Big Money").
Experienced fans might be surprised to find out that the album is far from the typical guitar-driven production of Denis Ward. Guitars and keyboards are balanced ideally with one never undermining the other while the rhythm section is not as up-front in the mix.
Overall "Happiness is the road" is bound to satisfy fans of Fergie's latest works namely "Frederiksen-Denander" and "Phillips-Frederiksen". Fans of "Toto", "Survivor" and "Work of Art" also have a pretty good reason to try the singer's comeback album.
