Product Description

All six episodes from the first series of the bittersweet, mid-life crisis comedy written by and starring Paul Whitehouse. In 'Personality Crisis' Danny (Whitehouse) tries to deal with his wife's death and the on-set of baldness. 'I'm Doing it for Me' concerns face-lifts and nipple piercing. 'Chained to an Idiot' finds Danny on the pull at one of Angus' parties. 'Desperate Dan' sees Danny receiving an explicit fan letter. 'Celebration' involves BAFTA nominations and enforced attendance at family parties. Finally, 'Forty' asks how one should deal with one's 40th birthday.

Synopsis

Happiness is Paul Whitehouse's first foray into the world of comedy drama and sees him playing Danny Spencer, a recently widowed minor celebrity in the midst of a midlife crisis. He writes and voices a cartoon character called Dexter (a kung-fu nurse bear). Danny is unhappy that he's loved more for his creation Dexter than for himself. Will he ever rediscover the happiness that he lost with his wife's death?

Bitter sweet comedy with some fine performances and a great script. It's mature and juvenile at the same time.
The DVD offers some interviews with the cast and director, which aren't particularly enlightening (or interesting). And that's about your lot as far as extras.
Not sure what happened in the transfer from the television to DVD, but a lot of the music has changed. I know this seems retentive, but I think it makes a big difference. Britney Spears appears now instead of Alainis Morisette in the pub jukebox. Danny dedicates Brass in Pocket to posh Emma. A mangled version of Jeepster features in one episode. It really spoils it, for me and I've dropped a star because of it.

The all "star" cast (+ nice cameos) are all on top form for this well written, funny series. Mark Heap and Pearce Quigley are terrific and Johnny Vegas gives a great caricatureless performance. If you haven't seen it give it a go with confidence. Really great.

"Happiness" ( 2 series ) is a comedy ,executed with a light touch and shrewd observation, of modern social manners and frustrations of midlife-crisis men. It stars Paul Whitehouse of the groundbreaking "Fast show" and Johnny Vegas ( who won an award for his role). The main character , Danny Spencer , is trying to juggle his professional life as the voice of a popular Kung fu nurse bear (!) with his recent status as a widower and attempts to find love.

Happiness is One of Paul Whitehouse's better offerings, essentially a comedy series but one which oozes with drama and pathos. Whitehouse's character is forced to deal with the death of his wife while facing up to his own mid life crisis (or as the blurb calls it personality crisis).

Despite the dubious (tasteless) premise of getting over his wife's death by searching out crumpet, the series retains realism, throughout storylines that are funny, sad and touching. Paul Whitehouse and Johnny Vegas demonstrate their considerable acting capabilities, along with Mark Heap, Clive Russell and Fiona Allen, truly stellar contributions.

I can't remember the original sound track, so I can't really comment on that. The music doesn't seem out of place - to me. If you haven't seen it before then I strongly suggest that you do so, at the earliest opportunity.

"Happiness" is undoubtedly one of the best examples of the recent renaissance in British comedy. A fantastic cast, excellent script and no irritating laughter track. Very adult humour, so not one so watch on the sofa with the kids. Second series is even better.
