Book Description

5 July 2007

Elinor Mackey has lived her life in perfect order: college, law school, successful corporate career, marriage. But suddenly her world is falling apart. Now in her late 30s, she's discovered that she and her podiatrist husband, Ted, can't have children. When Elinor withdraws from Ted into an interior world of heartbreak and anger, Ted begins an affair with Gina, the nutritionist at their gym - a young woman with an oddball son who adores Ted. Meanwhile, Elinor falls in love with the oak tree in her front yard, spreading out her sleeping bag to sleep under the stars.

Lolly Winston's second novel looks beyond the manicured surface of suburbia to a world of loss, longing, lust and betrayal.

1.0 out of 5 stars disappointing follow-up 19 Feb 2007
Format:Paperback
I was so disappointed in this book after enjoying Sophie's bakery...it didn't have a fraction of the warmth or quirkiness that made Spohie's bakery special. I didn't feel anything for the characters. Wanted to enjoy the book having looked forward to it and forked out for the more expensive paperback instead of waiting...but found reading it a chore. Skipped to the final chapter rather than abandoning completely to get my money's worth rather than any wish to find out what happended and it didn't look like I'd missed much. Hopefully this is just a blip and the next book will be back to the previous standard.

4.0 out of 5 stars sensitive amd insightful 5 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
I read this after I read Sophie's bakery for the heart broken. Although LW is dealing with very emotional story lines I felt that I didn't relate as well to the characters in this book, but perhaps that because of my own personal circumstances.

In terms of how she deals with strains on a marriage, the pain of loss, with re-found hope and wasted love is sensitive and insightful. I did enjoy this book, and although I wasn't warmed to any specific character, I am not sure you need to be to get something from this book. For me it made it more realistic that in this time of pain people act in ways that aren't always likable.

The ending was a bit unexpected but it brought the story line to a conclusion.

I look forward to LW's next book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 30 Jan 2009
Format:Paperback
After reading Sophies bakery I did expect this book to be of the same standard and quality, but I was very disappointed. I found the storyline very depressing and did not relate to any of the characters. There are no uplifting or upbeat moments at all, it is merely a story of doom and gloom. Definitely not bed time reading and I'm sorry I bought it.
