Who wouldn't want to know the secret to happiness? I certainly had great expectations as I opened this book for the first time...and I wasn't disappointed. Although it's tempting to want J.John to tell us a few quick and simple ways we can rearrange our furniture or re-style our hair to achieve ultimate joy in life, he doesn't - and a good job too! This is what we are usually advised to do by the media but going from the statistics that the author shockingly quotes here ("In 2006 there were 5,556 suicides in adults aged 15 and over in the UK.") these quick-fixes tragically don't appear to work.
Instead J.John suggests that happiness can only be found `indirectly' as a result of living life as God intended us to, which leads to true and profound fulfilment. Chasing after the emotion itself alone can in fact lead to greater emptiness and despair, when we realise it is so elusive. J.John takes the most famous teachings of Jesus - the Beatitudes - as a guide to how we should view, and behave in, life to release all the blessings that God has for us. Each chapter unpacks one of the eight phrases Jesus spoke on this theme and shows how they were not only relevant to those who heard it at the time but also to us today.
As I read this book I made a mental list of all my friends and family who do not have a faith that I could give a copy to as I knew these words I was reading would be revolutionary for them and provide a gift that went beyond the book itself I had bought them. For myself, as a Christian of many years, I found this book a real challenge to refine many of my attitudes and behaviours which it is so easy to become complacent about or not have the courage to stand our ground about in society. With that it also gave me real hope that true happiness is achievable - and at a deeper level than purported in movies, adverts and magazines - and that's a secret we should shout about.

In this book, J. John addresses the issue of happiness from the perspective of each of the beatitudes in turn. I'm sure you'll know what I mean when I admit that sometimes the beatitudes can seem rather remote from `real life', and I was challenged by his statement, "They're a `how to' for living in the real world . .." This book is full of wonderful biblical teaching and insightful application and I recommend it to you.

Once again J John writes about the truth of the Christian life in a way that is immediately accessible. His words, this time about the beatitudes, explain and challenge the reader with real insight and practical advice. Mixed in there are real examples with which I readily associated, his usual down to earth dry wit, and overarchingly sound Christian faith. A blessed man giving words of blessing to his readers - what more can I ask for?
