Book Description

25 Sep 2009
Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh's key teaching is that through mindfulness, we can learn to live in the present moment and develop a sense of peace. Accessible to those new to Buddhist teachings as well as more experienced practitioners, Happiness is the only book that collects all practices adapted and developed by Thich Nhat Hanh in his more than 60 years as a Buddhist monk and teacher. With sections on Daily Practice, Relationships, Physical Practices, Mindful Eating, and Practicing with Children, Happiness is a comprehensive guide to living our daily lives with full awareness, whether we are working, eating, parenting, driving, walking, or simply sitting and breathing. Thich Nhat Hanh says, "Enjoy your practice with a relaxed and gentle attitude, with an open mind and receptive heart.... Joy and happiness are available to you in the here and now."....Thich Nhat Hanh is a Vietnamese Buddhist monk whose lifelong efforts to generate peace and reconciliation moved Martin Luther King, Jr. to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1967. He lives in southwest France and travels regularly, leading retreats on the art of mindful living. He is the author of The Energy of Prayer, Being Peace, and many other best-selling books.

If this is your first experience with this amazing insightful writer and thinker, you are in luck. 'Happiness' covers every aspect of his thoughts, beliefs and teaching in one volume . From the importance of being aware of our breath and breathing to keep us in the present moment to how to do the smiling meditation which is so relaxing. He explains his philosophy of how we should live and respect nature and each other; how to sustain good relationships and improve less healthy ones; how to stay physically and emotionally healthy; our contribution to society and role within it; food and healthy agriculture, Short and long spoken meditations for every aspect of our waking day to remind us to be grateful and mindful of what we have and how to treasure it and achieve peace of mind and happiness as the title implies. All these aspects are then treated in different books more in depth, but this, along with 'Peace is every step' will change anyone but the most entrenched person's life. you will benefit greatly from reading it, and hopefully will go back to it time and time again. Beware! Just reading it may have some effect but it's only by putting his teaching into practice and making it part of your daily routine that you will really benefit from his writing.

This is a book which manages to be both simple and profound. I refer to it often, and I practise meditations from it. It has changed the way I think, and helped me change for the better.

5.0 out of 5 stars my tuppence worth 23 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback
Well, if you've scrolled down as far as the reviews, you're probably thinking about reading this book. I think you should - it's simple, insightful, profound, and leaves you feeling like you've just had a hug from a Zen Master. The title says it all, but if you'd like a further justification, think of it as offering possibly one of the best returns on your investment this year. This is the only item I've brought from Amazon that has inspired me to write a review, though I've had 'happiness' from all of the other things. Go on, click the button; you know you want to ;-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Happiness 10 Feb 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Happiness is a user friendly guide into the bliss of mindfulness - I would recommend it to anyone, particularly those who are always busy, stressed or anxious. If you are never in the moment and always thinking of the next thing on your endless 'to do' list, you are not really living. This book can help you break the cycle, it is also a pleasure to read and contains beautiful language. Bliss.

Excellent read, explains about our path to happiness, and what stops us from achieving this by simply projecting all the time...... Staying in the moment, and realising the happiness we have all around us if we just care to sit still for a while and realising how blessed we are in this very moment and in the 24 brand new hours we are given everyday.
