Elvis Sings the Great British Songbook

Biography

Elvis Aaron Presley is one of the biggest-selling artists of all-time, but mere numbers cannot begin to explain the colossal cultural impact he had in the mid-20th Century. He was a central figure in the transformation of the grey, conservative 50s into the technicolor 60s through the liberalizing effect of rock and pop music. Frank Sinatra had proved extremely popular in the 40s with young… Read more in Amazon's Elvis Presley Store

By far and away the best double feature.

"It Happened at the World's Fair" is lightweight in the extreme, but as that's what it sets out to be, one can't be too harsh. One can be harsh though of its near 20 minute running time! However, Elvis is in stunning form, absolutely faultless. This is Elvis at his slickest and most polished.

Elvis gives a remarkably polished version of the sort of kid friendly fodder he world later treat with total distain, making "Cotton Candy Land" and "How Would You Like To Be" far from redundant. The ballads are again polished but not totally enthralling, "A World Of Our Own" and "I'm falling In Love Tonight" are really quite dull.

But there is material for Elvis to exercise is talent on, even if not to stretch it. "Beyond The Bend" and "Happy Ending" are both fine lightweight pop efforts, the sort of efforts more in abundance on "Blue Hawaii" and "GI Blue".

The gems from the album made up the single. "One Broken Heart For Sale" was written by Otis Blackwell, who wrote Elvis' stunning "Return To Sender", and while not quite at those heights, is still a great single. "They Remind Me Too Much Of You" is a truly tender and touching ballad. Great Stuff!

In the way "Frankie And Johnny" is lifted with its Dixieland beat, so "Fun In Acapulco" is lifted by the Mexican/Bossa Nova vibe. Rumour has it that the writers paid a trip to Mexico to try and sample the sounds, and it paid off! Unlike "Frankie And Johnny" the material is by and large strong, and Elvis is totally bought in to the album. The best mid 60s Elvis album, and paired with "At The Worlds fair", another high spot, it explains why this is the must have double feature.

At times they all go a bit overboard on the Spanish theme, "The Bullfighter Was A Lady" and "EL Toro" in particular come across as rather contrived, but "Vino Y Amor" and "Maguerita" come across much better.

There's no truly outstanding track in the bossa nova efforts, but all are very strong and give this album its own sound, something that can't really be attribute to any other Elvis album , except probably is Chips Moman albums. "Mexico", "Fun In Acapulco", "No Room To Rumba", "I Think I'm Gonna Like It Here", "Bossa Nova Baby" and "You Can't Say No" are all very good Elvis tracks, and make this a very strong Elvis album.

Good Sountrack Albums 19 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Hardly King Creole, but this soundtrack compliments the excellent 'It Happened At The World's Fair' and the good 'Fun In Aculpoco.'

Standout tracks; They Remind Me Too Much Of You is a beautiful ballad and could not be sung any better. Im Falling In Love Tonight is also excellent, Elvis could sing a song.

One Broken Heart For Sale is bouncy, easy going rock n roll.

Fun in Aculpoco is entirely Spanish/Mexican flavoured, even sung in Spanish....but the standout of the CD is the excellent Bossa Nova Baby.

If you like Elvis, this CD is for you. 1 Jan 2002

Two classic movies with Elvis singing his heart out. My favorites on the movie Worlds Fair are "They Remind Me Too Much Of You" and "I'm Falling In Love Tonight" and the second movie Fun In Acapulco, I liked most of the songs and after listening to them wanted to hit my favorite Mexican restaurant. The songs really put you in the mood. My favorite song off of Acapulco is "Marguerita". Listen to Elvis' deep voice that really delivers chills in this one...forget Bossa Nova Baby as the hit off this movie, we've heard it a million times if your a baby boomer and to me has lost its luster. But this is a great CD all in all and definitely should be part of your collection. You really get your moneys worth with Elvis tunes on this one.

Elvis giving a mixture of everything 19 Jun 2007
By CJ Gish - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
"It Happened At The World's Fair" had plenty of fun songs on it, including "Beyond The Bend", "Take Me To The Fair", "One Broken Heart For Sale", and "Happy Ending". There's even the naughty little "Relax" song and the strong ballad "They Remind Me Too Much Of You".

"Fun In Acapulco" shows the versatility of Elvis with some Spanish thrown in the mix in "Vino, Dinero Y Amor" and "Guadalajara". He scores on the rocker "Bossa Nova Baby", which made it into the Top 10 on the U.S. charts, and some good ballads in "El Toro", "Marguerita" and "You Can't Say No In Acapulco". There's even some fun ones that kind of preview his future dismal soundtrack songs, such as "The Bullfighter Was A Lady" and "No Room To Rhumba In A Sports Car". You can tell he has fun with the last two, but unfortunately it would become a theme to sing corny songs in future soundtracks that were loaded with material like this.

Overall, two strong soundtracks. Both pre-1964 soundtracks, which is basically the cutoff year for Elvis' best soundtracks from top to bottom. After that, they take a downward turn and only a couple songs on each are very solid.

«Elvis 1963 soudtrack recordings« 14 Aug 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This cd collects the two soundrack albuns recorded by Elvis for is 1963 musical pictures. Booth films are entertaining as the respective soundtracks, but a few of the songs are really far from briliant and although they could be considered aceptable for being included on the pictures they shouldn't have been released on an Elvis Presley album. That is certanly the case of 'Cotton candy Land' and 'Happy Ending' from the «It hapened at World's Fair soundtrack«, but also 'there's no room to runba in a sport's car'from the «Fun in Acapulco« soudtrack. However if you like to ear some nice early sixties pop music, and especially if you are able to apreciate what the talent of a great singer and his fantastic musicians can do with some forgetable songs, you will consider this an entertaining album. Highligths are:the classic 'Bossa nova baby', 'Mexico', 'I think i'm gonna like it here' and 'The bullfigther was a lady' from «Fun in Acapulco«, and 'Behind the Bend', 'One Broken heart for sale', and 'They remind me too mutch of you' from «It Hapenned at World's fair«. In conclusion, a few nice songs in this cd, and specially Elvis having fun with the latin sound of «Fun in Acapulco«.
