4.0 out of 5 stars more love scenes and witty dialogue 12 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I enjoyed this James' book like her other ones. This was an improvement of her previous writing style because the love scenes are more detailed and pulled together all that hot sexual and emotional chemistry built up by Hero and heorine's clever one-upmanship. It's a humorous, smart, and emotionally savvy book about 2 strong characters who know what they want and seem to have opposing goals. We see a progression of Hero's transformation from an unapologetic and cocky player to a man who's captivated by heroine. I liked the extended time it took for the change because it made it believable, although I had a bit of a problem with his lack of communicating with her in between.** Overall, it's a good read with witty dialogue, sexy chemistry, and fine romance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Silly me 9 Jun 2014

I did a silly thing with this book I read it after reading a review on one of the websites I follow. Not so silly there except it was book 6 in Julie James's FBI/US Attorney series. Although it can be read as a stand alone book I found that I enjoyed it so much that I wanted to find out about the other people that we meet in the book and I wasn't disappointed. So from a personal point of view I would say start at book 1 as people you meet in that book continue to show up in the following books, but if your just looking for a good stand alone one off book to read you could do a lot worse that this one.

I love Julie James! She writes a straightforward romance, but manages to fit in plenty of humour along the way. You will love these characters.

Julie James has done well to match romance and humour. There were definite sections of laugh out loud for me. A modern and contemporary love story with great characters. A must read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Romance With Heart, Class, & Sizzle! 8 May 2014
By R. Lane - Published on
Format:Mass Market Paperback
It Happened One Wedding felt a little different from Julie James' previous novels. I think there was serious tone that wasn't in the other stories, and it really clicked with me.

Sidney is back in Chicago starting a new job after leaving New York, and a ruined relationship. After discovering her fiancé was cheating on her, Sidney feels she's wasted three years of her life. She should already be married and starting a family, something Sidney really wanted at this point in her life. At thirty-three she doesn't want to waste time on good-time guys, and commitment-phobes. Sidney wants to find a man that wants the same things in life. It's not that she begrudges those men, it's their right to live life as they wish, she just wants nothing to do with them. So when Vaughn makes a pass at her, Sidney brushes off his advances seeing him, knowing exactly the type of man he is:

"For men as attractive as you, this city is one big candy store, filled with so many shiny treats, you couldn't possibly choose just one. So instead, you run around with your obviously healthy ego, sampling as many of the goods as you can get your hands on--simply because you can."

Not my idea of an attractive prospect, and definitely not Sidney's. Vaughn can't believe Sidney would reject him, even though she was spot on in her description of him, he still doesn't like the smug way she nailed him. But seeing as they'll never lay eyes on each other again, oh well, right? Wrong. Just so happens Sidney's sister, Isabelle is marrying Vaughn's brother Simon, and they are to be thrown together not only because they'll soon be in-laws, but because they're both in the wedding.

Just because Sidney and Vaughn realize they are not right for each other because of their very different dating goals doesn't mean they're not intensely attracted. Being thrown together they end up getting physical, and Sidney justifies it as having some fun with "Mr. Right Now" while waiting for "Mr. Right".

Sidney's past, from her breakup to her relationship with her father made me feel so bad for her. She's not bitter, just has a sad, resigned acceptance of what happened and how things are. I think this most of all that lent the serious, somber aspect to It Happened One Wedding more than anything. As Vaughn and Sidney connect more emotionally, and become friends in addition to bedmates, some of that sadness lifts for Sidney, and Vaughn starts to feel desire for more than just a good time. I was thrilled when these two started to realize that their connection was more than just sex.

I was happily surprised Vaughn never had eyes for anyone else after Sidney came into the picture. I was fully expecting some flub-up that would've made it hard to like him. Instead, in spite of the time it took Vaughn to honestly acknowledge his feelings, I fell for him. His actions spoke louder than his words, and his inner denials.

Sidney was my favorite character. I just wanted to wrap her up and protect her from any more hurt. I think Vaughn felt the same way. I definitely wanted to slap her loser ex-fiancé after hearing the full story! A -hole! Her father was no prize either. *insert disapproving frown* Even when her sister's wedding planning reminds Sidney time and time of her setback, she always puts her sister's happiness above her own. Sisterly love and loyalty always get to me!

Julie James is the queen of class when it comes to romance stories, but that doesn't mean there isn't a hefty amount of sizzling scenes, as well. It Happened One Wedding was no exception. Any fan of Julie James or smart, classy contemporary romances will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful with Predictability 6 May 2014
By Steph TD - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
Galley provided by publisher for review on my blog. This is adapted from the review on my blog. No remuneration was exchanged and all opinions herein are my own unless otherwise noted.

I read a lot of romance novels so when I say a book is predictable it’s hard to know if it is just because I am so familiar with the genre. But, I was pretty sure the journey would be interesting.

This was a delightful, distracting read filled with quirky characters, good relationship development, and good communication. In fact, as a plot device switch-up it is different for the characters honesty to become part of the problem and not the solution. It’s got some pretty funny moments too. The kind that make great light romantic comedies.

I liked that the relationship progression takes place between two adults, set in their own personalities, with established family relationships and jobs, and over a period of time. This is good since the relationship in question gets off to a bad start so it gives time for the switch from dislike to lust to love. And I like that the female love interest isn’t just willing to settle for any old guy. I love that she has a less than perfect relationship with her father, and that she acknowledges it as okay.

I would love to know what happens to the characters after the last page! I think this is a great travel book or beach read. I enjoyed it a lot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smart and sexy 6 May 2014
By Kimberly - Published on
Format:Mass Market Paperback
It Happened One Wedding is both smart and sexy – my favorite kind of romance. Author Julie James has blended snark with substance and heat with heart to create a wonderfully entertaining story you won’t want to put down.

Sidney’s an intelligent, successful director at a private equity firm who’s thirty-three and determined to find the right man, one she can trust with her heart, a guy she can settle down and have a family with. FBI Special Agent Vaughn Roberts is not that kind of man. He may have charm and good looks on his side, but he’s a playboy at heart with no desire to get involved in a serious relationship. Though their initial “meet-cute” ends with Sidney writing him off, she can’t exactly do that once she learns that his brother is marrying her sister. Thrown together thanks to family, the sexual tension between Vaughn and Sidney slowly builds until it explodes in the most wickedly entertaining of ways. There’s a lot of push-pull in their developing relationship, and once in a while I wanted to shake Sidney and Vaughn to force them to be honest with themselves and each other about what they feel, but each had their reasons for being gun-shy about opening up.

It Happened One Wedding is incredibly well-written and I really appreciated the level of detail Ms. James included when it came to Sidney and Vaughn’s jobs. It’s clear Ms. James did her research and her doing so adds depth to the story that should not go unmentioned. In fact (charming romance aside), this is what sets It Happened One Wedding apart for me and is why I’m definitely going to be buying the rest of the FBI/US Attorney backlist. And speaking of said series, It Happened One Wedding is the first of Ms. James’s FBI/US Attorney stories that I’ve read and thus I can safely say it can be read as a standalone. But fans of the series shouldn’t worry – some of her past heroes and heroines do play a part in Vaughn and Sidney’s book. Whether you’re a fan of Julie James or simply enjoy a good contemporary romance, don’t miss It Happened One Wedding!

3.0 out of 5 stars This kills me to say, but... 13 May 2014
By Reader101 - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
This is the very first Julie James book that I can't give 5 stars. And it kills me to say that. But this one just didn't do it for me as much as her other stories. I read it in one sitting, which is normal because I love her stuff so much. But I found myself skimming a lot. Especially during the work scenes. I could care less about Sydney and her successful job. So she makes a lot of money and she's good at what she does. I don't need pages upon pages to tell me that. Just show it and be done. In her other FBI stories it seemed that the characters interacted more in the story (i.e. at work). In this one, they only interacted when it came to wedding things for their siblings. I kept waiting for one of the bad guys from Vaughn's case to see him with Sydney and go after her. Or for Sydney's father to be bad and Vaughn would have to take him down. I don't know. It just didn't have that constant spark where the two characters were forced together so much that they didn't have an escape. That's what I love most about her stories. The sexual tension was high and I still wanted to find out what happened at the end, but I didn't L-O-V-E it like her other stories. It was a bit more explicit than I'm used to also. No problem with that, per se. It just surprised me how graphic she made this one. Especially since the cover seems to allude it would be more of a sweet story. Like I said, it didn't bother me, but it surprised me a little.

I would definitely recommend this book, because, COME ON, it's Julie James. It just wasn't my favorite.

5.0 out of 5 stars The womanizer meets his match! 7 May 2014
By ambrosia - Published on

The womanizer meets his match!!!

This was another Classic Julie James. Her books follow a winning pattern without being repetitive or boring. Ms. James excels at light, fun, modern romances set in the real world. The characters are real - albeit attractive, smart, and successful - people. No wimps, either make or female! They're light - not too serious - but with excellent character and plot development and HEAs. The dialogue is clever but also realistic. I LOVE the dialogue - especially Ms. James' heroines; they have the type of dialogue I like to think I have: Witty, sarcastic, sometimes biting, but not cruel.

Another hallmark of Ms. James's novels is that the relationship develops over time. Instant attraction, but not insta-love. The H grows over time. In the book some people may not like what's going on with the h while the H and h get together, but it makes sense in the context, it's honest, and it's kind of funny. Besides it's necessary to give the H a kick in the pants. Yes if the roles were reversed I might have a problem, but considering what the H is like in the beginning, he deserves it!! Yes I'm being intentionally coy so as not to spoil anything. No artificial drama. No ridiculous displays. No trite plot devices. Just light, fun, sexy romance.

Another trait of a Julie James: her books also are rich in detail with the background of the story - frequently law enforcement, lawyers, big business, etc. In one book it was wine tasting (and she may have gone overboard with the details in that book, but at least she gets the details right!!!!). Her accuracy in a range of topics is exciting and original. (Though I did catch an error about the law in one of her early books!!! Tsk, tsk! That is actually her area!!) In this case, I enjoyed the short lesson into private equity companies.

You also catch up with a few of the couples from prior books, but you don't need to have read those books to enjoy this book. Though I might go re-read them to enjoy their getting to know you phase again.

And, as expected, her books have excellent English without typos and grammatical mistakes!!!

This was an excellent two hour read. I can't wait for the next one. Julie James is an auto-buy for me.
