About the Author

Luke Humphrey is head coach of Hansons Coaching Services and a member of the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project. Humphrey holds a B.A. in Exercise Science from Central Michigan University, an M.S. in Exercise Science from Oakland University, and is a Certified Clinical Exercise Specialist with the American College of Sports Medicine. Humphrey is also a professional distance runner with top 10 and podium finishes in major U.S. running races from 10K to marathon, as well as two-time qualifier for the Olympic Trials. Kevin and Keith Hanson are elite running coaches and co-founders of the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project. Kevin has earned multiple Coach of the Year distinctions in recognition of the performance of athletes racing in his programmes.

Having purchased the book in January I am currently in the preparation stage of using the Hansons plan for my Marathon in July. In general the book straight forward and easy to read/use with the caveat of the volume you have to commit to. With all of the ancilliary chapters on stretching and diet etc it covers off all of the items you need to consider for your first or multiple marathon. Triathlete Europe has featured this book as well for its use in Ironman training once I am in the 18 week training I will be adapting the plan to work in triathlon.

I ran my first marathon in 2012 and completed it in 4 hrs 25. When I won a ballot place for the 2015 London Marathon I was determined to get a better time and set myself a target of 4 hours. I found a copy of HMM and decided to take a leap of faith despite being a bit concerned about the number of training days and the long runs being capped at 16m. I followed the beginners' plan and managed to keep to about 90% of the plan, missing the odd few sessions through work or other things getting in the way. The training was tough, don't under-estimate how gruelling it is at times, but it works. I finished London 5 seconds under 4 hours and was particularly pleased that my last 7km was run at a faste rate than my first 5km. Previously my legs had locked at 19m but I was able to keep running strongly to the end. The princlple definately works but, again, it is not for the faint- hearted. If you want to improve your time significantly and can put in up to 8 hours a week over 6 days on your feet then you will be delighted with the results.

First marathon after two halves last year, both of which I struggled with because of injuries picked up during training. This time no injuries, I enjoyed the training, enjoyed the race and comfortably hit my target time, just like the book said. Big commitment and the peak weeks were demanding, but to me all justified by both the training experience and the end result.

Received the book in post this morning and finished it today. Once you decide to use this method to train for your marathon I would highly recommend getting the book. Explains everything in great detail. Will update review in May after the marathon is finished. Will let you know if the plan goes to plan. UPDATE UPDATE just finished the marathon using this plan. Trained for 3:50 finished in 3:50:59... I would highly recommend this plan to anyone thinking of doing a marathon even a first timer like me, be prepared to run 6 days a week and follow every detail to a tee.

This book is enlightening and really focuses your attention on cumulative fatigue and the benefits that brings. It goes into the science and how and why quite a lot which I really liked.
