This is the Metropolitan Opera production of circa 1983, with Judith Blegan and Frederika von Stade. A beautiful, traditional production, we have a DVD suitable for small children. Strong casting right down to the Sandman and Dew Fairy. No nightmares here! The late Thomas Fulton keeps it moving, and the principals give believable characterizations. No overacting, not "twee" in the least. A good English translation, with subtitles in multiple languages and a slide show history of Met Hansel productions. This is the one for children, and anyone who wants a traditional production. No dead bodies, no idiot children, no psychopathic witch, in short, NO EUROTRASH.

I remember seeing this production at the Met some years ago,I took a friend who had not been to an opera, and they loved it!The production was by Nathaniel Merrill with sets by Robert O'Hearn.(This is the same team that gave the Met "Der Rosenkavalier"which is considered to be the very best) It is a production that tells the story very well... with a great witch (Rosalind Elias) and Frederica Von Stade as Hansel and the great Judith Blegen as Gretal. This production is in English. The special effects are very good..with Angels flying through the air,and the witch with broomstick doing the same.. this is a great opera DVD with good stereo sound and is a great buy. (Far,far better than the new production at the Met,which to my mind is just poor, and a waste of a visit to the Met!)

At long last a wonderful production of a wonderful opera, even though it was filmed in 1982.I can't believe I have not seen this before. For years we have put up with more and more strange productions, trying to make this opera into something it was never intended to be.The Production might be a bit to sweet for some, but I would say to them sit back and enjoy the sugar rush. The singers are all top notch and so is the playing of the orchestra, and I loved the flying angels, flying witch and the gingerbread house.I can't recommend this enough, worth every penny.

Delightful production with two great leads who actually convince that they are children. This is very much a chocolate box production (which is probably what the composer intended) rather than the kitchen sink type of production which seems to dwell on urban poverty and child abuse. This is very much a fun production for children in English. The Met has a later one by Richard Jones which looks plain daft to me so I feel that this one is the one to have. Rosalind Elias is excellent as the witch. If you like your Humperdinck with plenty of sugar which I do then this is marvellous.
