As a teacher
This book has kept my class engaged for weeks! The story is quite long but it has been excellent for 'book talk' and 'writer talk'. The children are fascinated by the artwork and have found all sorts of hidden messages in the paintings and have decided that the step-mother is really the wicked witch which has been great for re-writing! I used it with year 2 but I think you could get even more out of the story and pictures with a much older age group.
As a parent
My children are old enough to go to bed later than me now so don't get bedtime stories. However they would have loved this book - particulary the pictures, over which they would have spent ages looking at all the clues and hidden messages that only children seem to see.

I have always admired Anthony Browne's books - they are creative and witty and regard children as being smart and aware. This book is no exception. It is the original Hansel and Gretel story but what is unique about this version is the modern illustrations. Children are very aware and are able to decode and understand multi-layered themes and this book is great for this. For a fairytale that has been in our consciousness for so long, Browne's contemporary illustrations are observant and intelligent and capture the essence of the story without changing the story in any way.

This is an excellent book with brilliant illustrations from an amazing author. Having used it as a resource for a topic in class it is so interesting what the children come up with when reading it and then when you look in to the book in depth and detail.Its amazing what they describe the significance of differnt items to be and the way in which the children 'look outside the picture'.I would highly recommend this book as an in class text, small grup work or for an individual to read or to be read too.
