If you buy this disc, and I heartily advise you to,you will see just why Hans Christian Lumbye(1810~1874) has the nickname,"The Strauss of the North",and although his compositions are certainly the equal of Johann Strauss,(who Danes regarded as the Lumbye of the South.)they certainly are not just replicas.
Lumbyes works have a froth and brio sometimes lacking in some of the works of the Waltz King.He manages to invest them with lightness, fun and real sense of the joy of the music.
From 1843 to 1872 he was Music Director and in~house composer of the renowned Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, where his works are still revered and played to this day.
This disc lets one realise just why Lumbye had such a reputation and follwing in Denmark, and indeed all over Europe.Played(fittingly) by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, conducted with much wit and aplomb by Gennady Rozhdestvensky.
If this disc whets your appetite practically all of Lumbyes works (11 volumes and counting) have been recorded on the Marco Polo label, with the Tivoli Symphony Orchestra under various conductors.
All I can say is,when you have listened to this disc you will want to go to Tivoli, and experience this wonderful music where it was intended to be heard, and in the surroundings that set it off to perfection.

I love so-called lighter music in many of its guises, especially that which emanates from Vienna-the Strauss family, Lehar, Kalman, Korngold's later operas, Bayer, Ziehrer, Stolz and Lanner all feature regularly on my "play lists!"
Lumbye (pronounced something like "Lermboo") is known as the Johann Strauss of the North, and in Denmark they reciprocate by describing Strauss as The Hans Christian Lumbye of the South!
The Strauss Family and Lumbye directed their own orchestras, Lumbye in the iconic Tivoli Gardens and the Strauss Family initially in Konditorei Dommayer in Vienna Hietzing (it's still there at the West End of Schonbrunn) and there are obvious similarities in the two histories as well as in styles.
This beautifully recorded and played disc from 1999 licensed by Chandos from Danish Radio features their world class orchestra in their usual concert hall with its resonant and flattering acoustic in music which they obviously enjoy and with which they are familiar. The surprise is the conducting of Rozhdestvensky, not an artist I associate with lithe and lilting conducting, but he shows himself to be consummate in this repertoire.
The 2 pieces which are best known and have featured in New Year's Concerts from Vienna are the Champagne Galop and the Little Train to Copenhagen Galop, and very enjoyable they are too in this recording with whistles and shouting porters in the latter.

Strauss of the North 23 Feb. 2014
By James G Horn Jr - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Hans Christian Lumbye was a Danish composer, primarily of waltzes, polkas, and other light music. He was a contemporary of Johann Strauss the Younger and his works are comparable in style and quality, My father brought home the LP version of this title in the '60's, and until now, it was the only time I heard this music. For those who accuse fans of classical music of being afraid of anything new, I am constantly searching for forgotten gems like this; who has time to search through the wasteland that is modern music for the few works that are worth listening to.
