DVD Description

Once upon a time, there lived in Denmark a young shoemaker named Hans Christian Andersen whose magical tales delighted boys and girls throughout the land. Filled with music, laughter and "wonderful, glittering fun" (L.A. Examiner), this charming fable follows the adventures of the legendary storyteller and "recaptures the spirit of fairyland make-believe for children of all ages" (Southern California Motion Picture Council). Nominated* for six Oscars®, Hans Christian Andersen is pure enchantment. Danny Kaye "is a delight" (Cue) as Hans, who one day journeys beyond the borders of his small village, across the sea and into the dazzling city of Copenhagen. There he encounters marvels and wonders beyond his wildest dreams...and finds the inspiration forsome of his most unforgettable characters such as "The Little Mermaid," "The Ugly Duckling," "Thumbelina" and many more. *1952: Art Direction (Color), Cinematography (Color), Costume Design (Color), Scoring of a Musical Picture, Song, "Thumbelina", Sound

Product Description

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), French ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), German ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), Italian ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), Spanish ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), Danish ( Subtitles ), Dutch ( Subtitles ), English ( Subtitles ), Finnish ( Subtitles ), French ( Subtitles ), German ( Subtitles ), Italian ( Subtitles ), Spanish ( Subtitles ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: Hans Christian Andersen was Sam Goldwyn's final production for RKO Radio release, and also the producer's last Danny Kaye vehicle. The Moss Hart-Myles Connolly screenplay largely disregards the facts concerning Denmark's great storyteller, opting for a fanciful blend of comedy, fantasy, romance and music. As played by Kaye, Hans Christian Andersen starts out as a small-town cobbler whose gift for spinning fairy tales is keeping the local kids from attending school. Asked to leave town, Hans heads to Copenhagen to seek his fortune as a writer. After having his heart broken by the beautiful ballerina Doro (Jeanmaire), Hans finds solace--and happiness--in the knowledge that hundreds of thousands of children the world over are devoted to his enchanting fantasy stories. The lilting Frank Loesser score includes such tunes as "No Two People," "The King's New Clothes," "Wonderful Copenhagen," "Inchworm," "The Ugly Duckling," "Thumbelina," and the title song. Hans Christian Andersen was a smashing box-office success, and as a bonus earned five Oscar nominations. SCREENED/AWARDED AT: Golden Globes, Oscar Academy Awards, ...Hans Christian Andersen

This film is one of Danny Kaye's best. He plays the famous Hans Christian Andersen. Hans is just a cobbler who lives a quiet live. But he has a great imagination, every day he goes to the river to tell the local kids stories. Stories of the ugly duckling, Thumbelina and the Emperor's new clothes and many more. This makes the head master of the school very angry because no one shows up for school. He is then driven out of town to Copenhagen where he does many great things.

I don't want to tell you too much so I don't ruin it for you. This movie has so many wonderful songs. The sets are beautiful and the actors are great. It's very romantic.

What makes this movie so great is that he doesn't tell the tales, he sings them.

I watch this movie about 1-2 times per year because it makes me feel good about my self and mankind, and if that makes me a bit silly then I don't care. I love this movie and I promise you that you will to.

Thank you :)

Charming and fun 1 April 2009
Format:DVD
Memorable tunes, glorious technicolour ( why have one colour when you can have ten !!!) and whimisical sentiment. I thought that the Hans Christian Andersen tales might be dramatised and acted out but most are simply told verbally and with a song or two. It reminds us that despite the glitz and glamour, the magic and expense of Hollywood, there's nothing quite like a simple story well told that engages the imagination. However, there is a ballet version of 'The Little Mermaid' within the film which goes on a bit... but it is imaginatively presented.
Don't expect too much, this film is what it is ( an old Hollywood slice of entertainment ) but it's charming and fun and will bring out the kid in you!
