I read HC Andersen's works when I was around 10. Re-reading the stories as an adult made me re-think my understanding of them as a child. Some of those stories are incredibly dark and brutal and obviously meant for adults. Others are sadder than sad - as in "The Little Mermaid". Others have happier endings - as in "The Ugly Duckling".
I would recommend HC Andersen's writings to young and old. I would also recommend that an adult read the stories that they feel are appropriate to children. The stories reflect the time that they were written and were in fact mainly written for an adult audience - just like the Brother's Grimm's tales and Asbjørnsen & Moe's tales.
Anyhow, enjoy.

This book is sized A4 plus and is very thick, so very heavy. Not necessarily what you could sit up in bed and read or read to your little ones as a consequence of that (mine are 3).
If you want a lovely illustrated books of HCA classics to capture your little ones imagination with pictures, then not the book for you. But if your kids are older and like just listening to stories then I imagine wonderful.
If you want a book of thumbelina/little mermaid with colour plates then not necessarily the book for you, but if you want a beautiful anthology then get it as good value and quick delivery
