About the Author

Hans Christian Andersen was born in Odense, Denmark, in 1805. At the age of 14 he went to Copenhagen to become an actor. He failed and instead went back to school, where he was very unhappy. He published his first book, an account of a walking trip in 1829. From then on he wrote many books, finding his true voice in his original fairy stories, which often had their basis in his life. He died in 1875.

I bought the book as I thought it would be fascinating to read fairy tales from the perspective of a 17 year old, rather than as a child, and although I did really enjoy the book, I honestly do think the stories are terrifying for children! I'm pretty sure the fairy stories I enjoyed when I was little were fairly heavily edited...

I can't recommend this book highly enough beyond that, it may seem an odd thing to read but honestly, the style in which fairy stories is written is almost haunting in its simplicity and economy. And the contrast between nostalgia and vague horror - fairy stories are actually fairly gothic in content - is unbelievably powerful.

Enjoy :).

The cover on this book is beautiful, as is the paper. I'm a really big fan of Penguin Deluxe Classics and this is perhaps my favourite cover design. Great for kids and adults alike, perfect bedtime stories.
