Being a massive fan of the Hannibal Lecter novels and films, I was delighted when this book was released recently. Giving equal converage to Manhunter (Red Dragon), Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal, O'Brien has written an interesting account of the trilogy. Although he makes some revealing suggestions about the making of the films, I get the feeling that many of his statements may well be just unproven theories as I have heard most of them before on the internet and elsewhere. Horror fans would be particularly be amazed to hear of the rumour that Exorcist Director William Friedkin was originally approached to star as Hannibal in Manhunter !! I find this too far fetched to believe, but who knows? The book has a generous collection of rare photographs in the centre (colour and black and white) and they serve to break up the book nicely. I would have liked this book to have been 'official' rather than 'unofficial' - that way we could have more belief in some of the more unusual ideas it puts forward. But nevermind, this is still a fascinating read at times, and as an ardent fan of the movies and Thomas Harris' original novels on which they were based, I can still recommend this book to anyone who would like to know more about the saga.
