Hannah Miller is a young girl who has had to grow up fast.   Since the death of her parents she has taken responsibility for her sister Alice, determined to provide her with the love and stability they've both been denied.  But when a violent incident with their bullying guardian finds the girls cold and hungry on the teeming streets of East London, Hannah realises she is out of her depth.  She has little option but to accept the help of the strange old woman Maudie whose ramshackle home at the end of Rotherhithe's bustling Hope Street, Hannah soon realises, is a den of young thieves.

Alice loves their new life, the companionship of the lively household and the gruff affection of the enigmatice, warm-hearted Maudie.  But despite the fact that she is growing increasingly fond of Jack, one of the most long-standing of Maudie's brood, Hannah can never be happy living outside the law.  As she battles for respectability, Hannah begins to see she is creating an ever-widening rift between herself and those she loves most dearly - one of whom, as the Great War approaches, might be taken from her for good ...

"Hannah of Hope Street" by Dee Williams is a great book. Ms. Williams tells the story of sister Hannah and Alice Miller, who after a fight with their uncle are forced into the streets, where they meet Maudie and a band of young thieves. Knowing stealing is not for her, Hannah wants to have a honest job. While changing her own situration, Hannah will changed the whole household.
As with of books, Ms. Williams brings out great characters that should not bee missed.

3.0 out of 5 stars An Okay Read........ 12 Oct 2012
Format:Paperback
This was an okay read and quite enjoyable. Was a bit slow and although I finished it I could just as well have put it down. She has a style of Catherine Cookson and the book is set in the early 1900's

Back Cover Blurb:
Hannah has had to grow up fast, taking on the responsibility for her sister Alice after the death of her parents. After a violent incident with their guardian, they are out on the streets. She has no option but to accept the help of Maudie, whose home at the end of Hope Street is full of thieves.

3.0 out of 5 stars A decent book by Dee Williams 2 July 2004
By M. E. Newell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
"Hannah of Hope Street" by Dee Williams is a decent book about young Hannah Miller who along with her younger sister Alice have ran off from her abusive uncle. She then runs into a gang of thieves, and then the Miller sisters decide to stay with them. In the passing years, Hannah get a job, Alice runs off to live with an actress and then Hannah falls in love with Jack a thief that does want to change his ways, but with the coming of World War 1, all of their live with change forever.

"Hannah of Hope Street" was okay but not Ms. Williams best. The plot seem slow and I could wait for it to end. Other books by Ms. Williams are better, but it might be worth for readers to check out.
