Product Description

Review
Suave, clever-clever story of a schizophrenic, his infatuation for a brutal, perverse young miss, and their coterie of dissipates who live in rather seedy circumstances in London's Earl Court. George Harvey Fone, lumberini, gauche, persistent, lonely, has two troubles. One, the "dead" moods which snap on and off and during which he realizes he has to kill Netta. Two, Netta, whom he timorously worships, and who only tolerates him for what he can buy her. How Netta, who "looked like a Byron beauty and was a fish", Peter, her Fascistic friend, go on riding and rooking Bone until finally his schizophrenic alter ego takes its violent revenge. Provocative, and handled with deliberate - acidulous details. (Kirkus Reviews)

5.0 out of 5 stars a great novel, 4 Sep 2004
By A Customer
one of Hamilton's finest novels.

he's a great writer, sadly neglected since his death in the early 1960s. very funny, very true, very real.

he's got a great ear for dialogue. no one writes a better pub scene'n Patrick Hamilton.

get into Hamilton today. he's the shane macgowan of modern literature!

I cannot believe that there is only one review for what is a major piece of writing. Everybody should read this author and they will learn a great deal about people. We kid ourselves that we are modern and that what motivates us is new but Patrick Hamilton proves that is a fallacy. Fashion, clothes and language, may have changed but people never change. A wonderful read written by a class act.
