Product Description

“Typical Monday,” Trev Irwin thought. “I spilled my breakfast, my car wouldn’t start, and someone’s trying to kill me...”

If you think YOUR life is stressful, then spare a thought for Brackenford’s number one estate agent, Trev Irwin. Two months have passed since he managed to survive a demon trying to steal his soul, which isn’t one of the more common hazards of the property business. He’s still none the wiser about who was responsible for summoning the creature, but at least things are beginning to get back to something that resembles normality. His injuries have healed, he’s selling more houses than his arch-rival Barry, and there’s the possibility of romance with Sarah, the new girl in the office. Even the continued scrutiny of the Custodians, the United Kingdom’s supernatural police force, can’t dampen his spirits too much.

What can, however, is an attempt on his life at a property viewing, and that’s just Monday. Things go further downhill when a trip to a spooky local landmark, Hangman’s Pond, leads to him finding out that he’s going to be dead by the end of the week…but not when or how it’ll happen. There certainly seem to be plenty of candidates for the role of executioner: a Victorian hit-man, a group of zombies and a vampire Colonel all have bones to pick with Trev, and if he’s to have any hope of staying alive he needs to deal with them.

It’d be useful to have a team of kick-ass allies to rely on, but all Trev’s got is his seventy-eight year-old Granddad, a haughty ghost called Agatha, and Oscar, a sardonic possessed cat. There’s also a mysterious woman in a mask, but who is she and whose side is she on? Trev hasn’t got long to figure things out, so he needs to work fast. After all, there are worse things than just being dead…

HANGMAN’S POND is the second book in “The Brackenford Cycle” series.

Since reading the first book location, location, damnation and the subsequent novella I have been waiting for this book with anticipation, and it hasn't disappointed. Yet again I found it very difficult to put this book down. The writing style has developed and Trev is a more likeable character here, he still has his flaws (which I am grateful for as they do provide a good source of amusement), and there is the definite feeling that both the character and the author have a fantastic future ahead of them.

I won't go into the story here too much as I don't like spoilers in reviews and there is so much to this story that it is difficult to talk about it without giving too much away. The story starts with an assassination attempt from an unexpected source and keeps you guessing from there. The main characters from the 1st story are here, including my favourites Oscar and the twins (the vapour weapons), and the relationships between them are gaining more depth with scope for future.

As soon as I finished this book, I went back to the first book and have started reading it again. For me this is always a sign not only of a good book but a good series and something which I do after reading a new book by my favourite authors (though with Jim Butcher this is becoming a bit of a marathon!). That for me shows how good this author is becoming. I can't wait for book 3!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read! 2 Feb 2014

Book 2 of the Brackenford cycle was every bit as well written and entertaining as the first. I could not put this book down - the way the characters and their relationships are developing is exciting and the plot is well thought out. I am looking forward to the next instalment from this new and witty writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic combination of wit and suspense 5 Feb 2014

Book two of The Brackenford Cycle provides a fantastic combination of wit - courtesy of the banter between Trev and Oscar - and suspense. The plot leads you around Brackenford and introduces great new characters with reference to book one culminating in an absorbing finale and creating intrigue. I can't wait for the third book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Installment! 16 Mar 2014

After the previous two encounters we are once more joined by Trev and rest of the cast. It's been a while since he's seen anything supernatural but that's changed by an unusual viewing. This starts a chain of events taking him and his friends on another life and limb adventure, toned by wisecracks and humorous observations. This is definitely worth a read, but only after the first two books as both are referenced within. I'm now left to wait for the next part: Spectre's Rest - Hurry Up Nick!
