Product Description

Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus face a familiar sociopath in this electrifying new tale of suspense from New York Times bestselling author Faye Kellerman

When LAPD Lieutenant Peter Decker reluctantly agrees to do a big favour for old friend Teresa McLaughlin, he knows that his involvement will bring her sociopathic husband, Chris Donatti, back into his life. But then Terry goes missing and Donatti disappears, leaving their 14-year-old son Gabe behind.

Meanwhile Adrianna Blanc, a party-loving nurse, is found swinging from the rafters of a house in a wealthy suburban area. Her last phone call announced she was breaking up with her philandering boyfriend and Decker questions whether it was in fact suicide.

With lives hanging in the balance, Decker and his team need to find answers fast. At home matters are just as precarious: while Decker and his wife Rina Lazarus want to look after young Gabe, with Donatti on the loose, no one is really ever safe…

Though this book didnt make me feel like it was amazing or really good, it interested me enough to keep going for three nights and even though i thought there were a few holes in the detectives reasoning and judgement / actions on the hanging I liked the family plotline.
Ok I admit I liked part of the ending. The family part. But the murder case itself, I feel the author didnt think ANYTHING through at all. The conlusion wasnt even an actual conclusion, it was like a cold case. WHAT? Seriously?
The whole two suspect ending aswell.
Im rambling but to finish:
If I thought this book had any redeeming qualities it would be about the boy and his parents, but that isnt enough to save its mess of an ending. The whole theory of the murder completely falls apart with the conclusion.
I expected an actual ending not some cowardly open ended piece!

Hangman marks the 19th and latest outing for Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus. I must have read most of their previous adventures over the years and sadly this was not the best by quite a long way. There are two parallel investigations going on - one involving the disappearance of Teresa, wife of Chris Donatti who both make a reappearance here, joined by their 14 year old piano playing prodigy son, Gabriel. The other case involves the death by hanging of a nurse which develops as the story progresses.

Most of this tale concentrates on the hanging case, and like other books in the series there is a good measure of Peter and Rina's domestic affairs and the various celebrations and events in the life of a middle class, Jewish American family. I quite like this aspect of these books, though their family is a bit too good to be true - Peter and Rina together with the half siblings, step siblings, in laws etc are all so nice and successful and appreciative of each other that there is never a cross word.

The story is well thought out as one would expect from this author, but does not progress very quickly. The ending ties everything up, but I did not find it very satisfactory as we effectively get pages and pages of explanation, rather than the answers being gradually teased out bit by bit. Not wanting to give any spoilers here, but if one thinks through the conclusion to the death by hanging case, the series of events were fairly improbable and did amount to lottery winning odds.

So an OK read, but not very memorable. Hopefully the next Decker/Lazarus story will be back to the usual standard. Finally I have no idea why the publishers feel they need to put 'For all fans of Kathy Reichs' twice on the cover. Kathy Reichs is a successful author and so is Faye Kellerman, but Tempe Brennan is a forensic anthropologist and is about a million miles away from Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus.

Again Faye Kellerman does not let us down! This book again brings us back to Pete Decker and his lovely wife Rina with a fast paced mystery where other characters that we have met before reappear. Pete is asked to help out an old acquaintance Terry who is married to Chris Donatti then she disappears leaving her teenage son with Pete. The story progresses from there with Pete searching for the missing mother. In addition to this he must investigage another murder operating in his area. This is another excellent offering from Faye Kellerman who continues to produce gripping thrillers time after time.
