Review

'Clark capably draws out the turmoil of rebellion and fealty boiling under Richard II's insecure, juvenile reign, while giving Hildegard plenty of scope to poke her nose the violence engulfing the de Hutton dynasty' (Financial Times )

'Cassandra Clark's prose is flawless' (Daily Telegraph )

'Hildegard is an engaging protagonist, sensible, kindly, resourceful and believable; she is also endearing susceptible to a pair of Saxon blue eyes (Ulf) and Norman grey ones (Hubert). Fans of historical crime will relish this'

(Joanna Hines, Guardian )

'A strong novel about how denying the past can destroy lives' (Sunday Age )

'A promising new heroine'

(Diplomat )

'The political background is intriguing and Hildegard is a strong and likeable heroine with a big future'

(Huddersfield Daily Examiner )

'The quality of research in this novel is obviously of the highest order and one can only look forward to the next in the series.'

(East Riding News )

'Clark delivers a medieval whodunit which is both delicate and dangerous, reeking of lust, treachery, greed and violence and which keeps the reader at least one step behind'

(Northern Echo )

'Hangman Blind is a brilliant book which I thoroughly enjoyed - not just because it's set in  1382 with all the richness of that period, but because it's so well written'

(BFK Books )

'A well written and engaging story'

(Euro Crime (online) )

'The strength of the book...is in the quality of the historical imagination and the attempt at integrating the political and social situation into the plot'

(Reviewing the Evidence (online) )

'A debut author with raw nerve ... this first book in Clark's series will delight historical crime  fans who enjoy constant plot twists'

(Historical Novels Review )

Product Description

November, 1382. The month of the dead. At the Feast of St. Martin in the fifth year of King Richard's reign, a nun rides out for York and the Abbey of Meaux. But this is no ordinary journey. Rival popes, a boy on the English throne and a volatile peace in the savage aftermath of Wat Tyler's murder.

Travelling alone, Hildegaard encounters a gibbet with five bloodied crow-stripped corpses, and later the body of a youth, brutally butchered. Who is he? And what is his connection to the hanged men?

Murder will touch Hildegaard and those she loves even more closely as she rides on to her childhood home. Castle Hutton is riven by treachery. Old loyalties are shifting. Hildegard will need all her courage to counter the dark forces in the land.

First in an engrossing new series of medieval mysteries, Hangman Blind introduces an intrepid new heroine.

Yorkshire in 1382 comes alive in this well written, well researched book.
The tale is interesting, even gripping (there is murder, treachery, there are surprising twists in the story) and the book is a page-turner.
But this is a more ambitious book, which succeeds in conveying the atmosphere of the time and place through a never boring, very visual depiction of the sights (I especially liked the clothes), the scenery, the sounds, even the weather of medieval Yorkshire.
I have also learned, quite painlessly, a lot about the social history of the time, mainly, but not only, through the well rounded characters (my favourite is Roger de Hutton) and their life. We meet Normans, Saxons, powerful and powerless, rich and poor, and monks (the protagonist is a lively, strong Cistercian nun and the abbey of Meaux, in Yorkshire, is central to the story).
I took great pleasure in savouring the writing itself, the turn of phrase and the visual depiction.
I closed the book wishing for more and look forward to the next book in the series.

I took this book on holiday with me, I could read the odd chapter I thought if the weather was not too good. However, once I had started reading Hangman Blind I didn't want to put it down and was quite glad that there was quite a bit of rain to provide a good excuse for not going out. My husband did get a little put out that everything else - cooking, shopping and even sleeping seemed to be falling by the wayside until I had finished the book.

Apart from a good tale, Ms Clark has obviously done a great deal of research into what life was like at the time in which the book is set and that considerably added to its interest. There is much rain and mud in this book which given this summer's weather seemed to add to its appropriateness as holiday reading.

Ms Clark leaves enough hints of future sculdugary to come to ensure that I for one will be buying the next book in the series.

intriguing intrigue 26 May 2009

Format:Paperback
I don't usually get into this sort of book, maybe being male - but this hooked me. I was intrigued by the obvious excellent historical research - and by the characters - so I read to the end - and met the surprise. Well worth a read. And it is so well written.

In fact, it has led me to the follow-up, The Red Velvet Turnshoe. The Red Velvet Turnshoe (Abbess of Meaux Mystery 2)I shall report back.
