I recently saw Classixx in concert (more on that later). Classixx is an LA-based duo that brings electronic dance music that is clearly indebted to 1970s influences such as Giorgio Moroder and even Kraftwerk. This is their full length debut album.

“Hanging Gardens” (12 tracks; 56 min.) starts off with the title track, and immediately you feel the great vibes. Next comes “All You’re Waiting For”, the first of a number of tracks that features a guest lead singer, in this case Nancy Whang. The 6+ min, “Holding On” is one of THE highlights of the album, with a mesmerizing groove. Towards the middle of the album, starting with “Long Lost”, we get a bunch of songs with more guest vocalists, including the excellent “I’ll Get You”, featuring Jeppe (it’s also the first single from the album). Towards the end of the album, it starts to drag just a bit, and I would’ve probably cut the weakest one or two tracks on here, but in the end it’s a minor quibble. “Borderline” (feat. Jesse Kivel) closes the album in fine style. Bottom line: while a bit long for its own good, this album nevertheless is a delight, and the perfect soundtrack for summer.

Just last weekend I saw Classixx at the Vogue in Indianapolis, opening for Cut Copy. The duo came on and immediately was determined to get everyone dancing and enjoying themselves. They opened with a cover of the Preatures’ “Is This How You Feel?”, which of course the guys originally remixed for the Preatures. Much of their 40 min. set came from the “Hanging Gardens” album. For the songs with a guest lead singer, the band cleverly had stylish video appearances from those singers (including Sarah Chernoff on “A Stranger Love”). A very enjoyable set all around, and if you have a chance to see these guys in concert, you don’t want to miss out on this. Meanwhile, “Hanging Gardens” is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

This first album from DJ duo Classixx, based in LA, is what happens if you put 80's style synthesisers, funk, Daft Punk, chill-out, electronic dance and 90's house music in a West Coast blender, topped off with a crisp, clean and almost surgical sound courtesy of the smart production. Recommended not just for those looking for an alternative to the usual pulse-pounding beats but for those who like their dance music retro.

Wow what an album - had never heard of Classixx But saw a review and took a chance. So glad I did - its a cool
chilled out album - sort of Air/GusGus/Alpinestars combined. Recommended.

Loved it. Has a summer vibe, happy and bouncy house. The tracks compliment each other, I'm happy to play the whole album everytime.
