This compilation starts with the excellent 'Make me know it' by Elvis, this track sets the tone for the next 23 tracks. This is a quality release by 'Ace' records, it runs 51.39 mins (a little on the short side - a couple more tracks would have been great). It has great sound quality and comes with an excellent 20 page colour booklet. There are only two tracks that aren't my bag (Mahalia Jackson and Dinah Washington) the rest flow nicely as a compilation. There are too many great tracks on this cd to mention but it's nice to here the rare David Hill version of 'All shook up' which is good but lacks the umph and magic dust of Elvis Presley's no.1 hit. My favourite track is the demo of 'One broken heart for sale' by Otis Blackwell himself - it's interesting, fascinating and fantastic - Elvis clearly adhered closely to this demo and got himself a hit. Overall a very good compilation with quality tracks on it (4.5 stars really).

Please note: Fever by Little Willie John is the strings overdub version (King 5591 (1962).

HEARING OTIS DOING HIS OWN THING ON 'DADDY ROLLIN STONE' A SONG RECORDED BY THE LIKES OF ANDRE WILLIAMS GIVES US AN IDEA OF HIS BROADER TALENT THAN JUST WRITTING THE SONGS THE WHOLE WORLD HEARD AND PURCHASED WHEN ELVIS AND JERRY LEE LEWIS DONE THEM IN THE 50,s

BLACKWELL GETS SOME LIMELIGHT FOR HIS SONGWRITING 8 Jan. 2013
By Stuart Jefferson - Published on Amazon.com
Otis Blackwell's name may not be known to many, but his songs sure are. He wrote "Fever" (Little Willie John), "Don't Be Cruel" (Elvis Presley), "Great Balls of Fire" (Jerry Lee Lewis), and a number of other great tunes. But he also played the piano and was a pretty good singer in his own right.

Not many people can say they influenced r&b, and r'n'r to the extent Blackwell did. But check out the other songs here-the relatively lesser known sides-by (perhaps) some lesser known singers. There's some small gems here worth hearing. Listen to "Brace Yourself" by Ben E. King, "I'll Find You" by Gene Pitney, or "For My Good Fortune" by Mahalia Jackson, and "Just Keep Up And See What Happens" by Dee Clark. This set isn't everything Blackwell wrote-hopefully there will be another issue of his work similar to this one.

It's about time that this genius of r&b/r'n'r song writing had a collection like this. Most everything here is well worth hearing. Check out "Honky Tonky" by Dinah Washington, or "One Broken Heart For Sale" by Cliff Richard & The Shadows. "Hey Little Girl" by Thurston Harris is pretty nice too. Hopefully Ace Records will issue that second volume of Blackwell's gems. But for now, this will do nicely. You might also want to check out a recently released album by Dan Penn-his sides from his Fame Records period-very good indeed.
