Product Description

“Rachel Macy Stafford's post "The Day I Stopped Saying Hurry Up" was a true phenomenon on The Huffington Post, igniting countless conversations online and off about freeing ourselves from the vicious cycle of keeping up with our overstuffed agendas. Hands Free Mama has the power to keep that conversation going and remind us that we must not let our lives pass us by.”

DISCOVER THE POWER, JOY, AND LOVE of Living “Hands Free”

If technology is the new addiction, then multi-tasking is the new marching order. We check our email while cooking dinner, send a text while bathing the kids, and spend more time looking into electronic screens than into the eyes of our loved ones. With our never-ending to-do lists and jam-packed schedules, it’s no wonder we’re distracted.

But this isn’t the way it has to be.

In July 2010, special education teacher and mother Rachel Macy Stafford decided enough was enough. Tired of losing track of what matters most in life, Rachel began practicing simple strategies that enabled her to momentarily let go of largely meaningless distractions and engage in meaningful soul-to-soul connections. She started a blog to chronicle her endeavors and soon saw how both external and internal distractions had been sabotaging her happiness and preventing her from bonding with the people she loves most.

Hands Free Mama is the digital society’s answer to finding balance in a media-saturated, perfection-obsessed world. It doesn’t mean giving up all technology forever. It doesn’t mean forgoing our jobs and responsibilities. What it does mean is seizing the little moments that life offers us to engage in real and meaningful interaction. It means looking our loved ones in the eye and giving them the gift of our undivided attention, leaving the laundry till later to dance with our kids in the rain, and living a present, authentic, and intentional life despite a world full of distractions.

So join Rachel and go hands-free. Discover what happens when you choose to open your heart—and your hands—to the possibilities of each God-given moment.

'Hands Free Mama' by Rachel Macy Stafford is a book for which every mother and wife should put aside a few hours to read - because its pages would be helpful to become happier and realize what's actually important in life.

Until few years ago, the author as well as every woman who is also mother and wife, led customary life of frantic pace, having no time for what matters the most - her family of two young daughters and husband. At one point Stafford realized she could no longer live like that, therefore she decided to make a large cut in her life - she began to change it completely, no longer spending days fulfilling endless to-do lists, but instead living a more relaxed and intentional life, embarking on her personal journey towards becoming a better parent and partner.

She began to record her changes, sharing them with the readers on her blog, and as a product of the overall change she managed to make in her life, this book was created.

This book that has around 250 pages reader will be read very quickly because of the interest what is on the next page, but its real value comes after you complete the first reading because definitely you will want to read it again. The author described the whole process of change through which she passed in detail, and her concept though it may sound simple when you compress it in the phrase "more relaxed life" is not such that it can be implemented at once and quickly.

For this reason, the author helps the reader in a way that if you truly want to make changes in your life that should be done gradually and thoroughly using advices and experience that she is offering not selfishly.

2.0 out of 5 stars nice idea, poorly delivered and super-Christian 11 Feb 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I like the idea of prioritising moments of connection with my family over work and to do lists, but I struggled with the twee, repetitive and patronising tone of the book and felt the message could have been conveyed in one chapter. I don't need to think of time with my family as God given Sunset Moments to think they have value. There are only so many trivial but designed to be tear-jerking anecdotes that can get an emotional response, and I don't need to read a set of sentimental poems and reflections for every strategy. I wanted there to be more to this book than 'slow down and pay attention to your kids' expressed in ten different ways, ideally some evidence related to attachment research, child development, well-being or the outcomes of different parenting strategies, but this was entirely absent.

There is a huge assumption in this book that, like the author, the reader is a Christian homemaker with a traditional family configuration. She seems to spend inordinate amounts of time and effort on presenting a good appearance, and to have started from a position in which she never talked to her children to think it a revelation to join in the games when they went swimming or to have a conversation rather than using her mobile phone whilst driving or to allow her children to join in household chores. If this is the state we've got to in the world then maybe some people do need to start from something this basic, but I suspect many mums with demanding jobs still manage to kiss their kids goodbye when they drop them off at school and have conversations with them in the car or the doctor's waiting room.

Its not everyone's cup of tea but helped me to focus on what is important in life and that is not an i-phone, facebook, candy crush or e-mail. Like a lot of self-help kind of books it is slightly repetitive but it emphasises a hugely important set of points. Invaluable read and has helped me get back on track and some quality time with my kids.

This book came at the perfect time for me. I found myself nodding along and recognising so many of the issues covered. There were a fair few tears on my part.

This book is engaging and sensitively written.
