Book Description

1 Nov 2008
Today's crafters are no longer interested in simply cross-stitching samplers or painting floral scrolls on china. Instead, the contemporary craft movement embraces emerging artists, crafters, and designers working in traditional and nontraditional media. Jenny Hart's Sublime Stitching has revolutionized the embroidery industry. Each year Nikki McClure sells thousands of her cut-paper wall calendars. Emily Kircher recycles vintage materials into purses. Stephanie Syjuco manufactures clothing under the tag line "Because Sweatshops Suck." These are just some of the fascinating makers united in the new wave of craft capturing the attention of the nation, the Handmade Nation.
Faythe Levine traveled 19,000 miles to document what has emerged as a marriage between historical technique, punk culture, and the D.I.Y. ethos. For Handmade Nation (along with the documentary film of the same name, coming in 2009) she and Cortney Heimerl have selected 24 makers and 5 essayists who work within different media and have different methodologies to provide a microcosm of the crafting community. Participants in this community share ideas and encouragement through websites, blogs, boutiques, galleries, and craft fairs. Together they have forged a new economy and lifestyle based on creativity, determination, and networking. Twenty-four artists from Olympia, Washington, to Providence, Rhode Island, and everywhere in between show their work and discuss their lives. Texts by Andrew Wagner of American Craft Magazine, Garth Johnson of Extremecraft.com, Callie Janoff of the Church of Craft, Betsy Greer of Craftivism.com, and Susan Beal, author of Super Crafty, supply a critical view of the tight-knit community where ethics can overlap with creativity and art with community. Handmade Nation features photographs of the makers, their work environment, their process, their work, and discussions of how they got their start and what motivates them. Handmade Nation is a fascinating book for those who are a part of the emerging movement or just interested in sampling its wares.

2.0 out of 5 stars Handmade Nation, not as good as I'd hoped 22 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback
I'm sorry to say Handmade Nation wasn't as good as I'd hoped. I was full of goodwill for this book and for Faythe Levine, being a crafter myself. But it's a book that can be browsed through and ... well, that's it really. You look at the glossy pictures, read far too short interviews with crafters/artists that aren't in depth enough to be very meaningful, and then the book goes on the shelf and it slips from your mind. If you want a much better value book about the ressurgence in craft go for Amy Spencer's The Crafter Culture Handbook. A nice fat book full of insight into craftspeoples work, plus patterns & instructions on how to make a vast range of items. Plus longer pieces on knitting, the new domesticity, a good resources section. It's better value and a practical size and layout.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, not special 6 Feb 2010
By Rennie
Format:Paperback
There has certainly been a revolution in business in the recent years. Small based entrepreneurs have created niche markets for themse;ves and their friends, and this is a good thing. This book showcases such pioneers. If you are interested in the indie community, you may have seen their websites already. What the book does is bringing together some of these people and their work.
However, it does not offer anything more substantial than what you would find in Etsy profiles, for example. There isn't any work put in assessing the "why" and the "how" behind these people and their business. In that, the book disappoints. It is useful if you want an introduction to the indie scene in the States.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Really Good Book 1 Mar 2009
Format:Paperback
I bought this as a birthday present for my friend and she loved it. It's full of amazing artists with information on all of them there inspiration and working method.

The book itself is pretty to look at and well put together with really good photography, which makes it enjoyable to look through. I was almost tempted to buy one for myself.
