Mungo Jerry's music has always been at its best when it's raw, spontaneous and as live as you can get. This set by the MJ Trio, namely front man Ray Dorset, plus drummer James Davis and bassist Matt Round, was recorded after a set of live gigs which mixed original songs and standards from various genres in equal measure, in a no-fuss environment with the minimum of overdubs. It rings the changes from one style to another, from the mid-tempo rockabilly of the old 1952 Clovers' rockabilly favourite `Ting-A-Ling' and the faster rock'n'roll of `Gamblin' Man' to the moody, bluesy `Goin' Down Slow' to the joyous standard `Bottle Up And Go'. There are also some gems from the Ray Dorset songbook like `Blowing All My Troubles Away', the relaxed `With A Girl Like You', and `Shadow Of The Trees' and above all, `Margarita', which an earlier line-up originally recorded in the late 1970s and remains one of his best-ever songs.

Absolute breath of fresh air - this is Ray Dorset at his best - without the backing tracks simply raw - this iw well worth a listen as his musical skills show through as his mastery of the live scene is reproduced

I love this CD! It features Ray backed by drummer, James Davis and Matt Round on bass, on ten recordings pretty much 'live' in the Red Bus studios, during November 2002. The set features 'Margarita', one of the best loved `little known' Mungo numbers, and Ray's favourite version of the bluesy 'Goin' Down Slow', a song the band were playing back in the halcyon days of the early 70's. You've got to look out for the rockabilly, toe-tapping 'Gamblin'Man', what an authentic feel this song has, but when I think about it, the whole album has that. Take it from me - it's a must for all fans!!!
